Reminded me what a w*nker Barry Knight is.. Remember watching that 2nd leg!! Still makes me blood boil now when i think about it...

I was at that game along with thousands of fellow Wanderers fans and I have never seen as many angry fans. Fans young, old, female, male all fuming. Knight should have been strung up after that game. It must be the worst ever performance by a referee.

Was 10 years ago on Monday. Doesnt seem like it...

Wasn't at that game, but the statistics must be unique in football history.

Should have been an FA enquiry.

But then Sheepshanks (?) had already had the away goals rule overturned after they'd lost to us the previous year. We should have been ready for anything .........

I was there also & i've never seen the game since. It'd be interesting to watch it again in a calmer atmosphere, just to see if any of the decisions could be justified or if it was as bad as it seemed on the night.

One day we might get the truth ...............amazing the game was'nt even shown live & escaped the sort of scrutiny that such coverage gets.

Why does changing the away goals so benefit Ipswich? OK if Sheepshagger unduly used his influence to change the rules after his club lost out, but surely its still the same rules for everyone?

I never went to that game but had to settle for radio coverage as the game was not shown live. The highlights were shown later. I have yet to see a re run of that game which makes it seem more a conspiracy. All the games happenings was meaningless when the news of those two fans filtered through.

He does admit there were some srange decisions, but he reckons a lot of it is down to Bolton self destructing. He has invited me to watch the game with him many times so he can point this out.........I have of course declined everytime. The same mate also wonders why Bolton fans are still so bothered about it all these years later, it's not as though it was our only chance at "the big time". It was an absolute disgrace. You've only to look at the so called self destructing players like Mark Fish and Robbie Elliott to know that they have no previous or post history. The Mark Fish penalty was a travesty.

 

To tell the truth, I wasn't at all surprised on the day because I'd seen Knight ref a Bournemouth game about 3 weeks earlier and he was so biassed for the home team that he didn't give the opposition a free kick in the 2nd Half until the 88th minute. He should have been weeded out by the system long before and he should have been struck off immediately.

 

Anyway, Ipswich are going back to the underleagues with Roy Keane as their manager so the affair is water under the bridge for me.

We've had the last laugh over Ipswich a few times since "Knightgate" though.

As for Barry Knight,i hope he gets gang raped by Hells angels.

Fair comment but the explanation given by the League officials at the time was something along the lines of 'a team that finishes sixth in the league

 

should not be advantaged over a team that finishes third ' Which meant that the year previously Bolton (6th) knocked out Ipswich (3rd) on the away goals

 

rule so they were doing away with it .

 

Completely illogical I know but it was a knee jerk reaction & obviously Sheepshanks drove it through & the playoffs have been stuck with it ever since
