whole pitch in front you, touch line to squeeze attackers against, out ball down channel usually on? pace good positional sense decent passing range - cahill has all those.

fullback used to be the easiest place to play. every tom, dick & harry could fill in there if need be.

 

but these days i think much more is expected of a fullback, he kinda needs to be able to doing everything.

 

 

it seems most are saying either ricketts or steinnsson at right back with a "best of a bad bunch" slant then why does playing cahill there who is a better footballer than both of them that bonkers i don't get it, the lads a footballing centre half he's not exactly Mark Seagraves is he??

 

Full back is arguably the easiest position on the pitch, he'd lap it up a man of his talent surely, i agree it is very unlikely but is it that stupid an idea really is it?

 

Or is it anymore stupid an idea than dropping Zat Knight one of the best defenders we have and most consistent performers this season just at the time when we're shipping goals and struggling to score (meaning clean sheets are prized to nick a 1-0 or 2-1) in favour of 2 right backs who were both appalling on their last outings?!

Full-back is a very difficult role to get used to - it can be extremely different every week, depending on the set up of the opposition and you invariably have to deal with the opposition's quickest and nimblest players.

 

You also have to know when to pop across and cover the centre-half and when to support the wide midfielder.

playing full back in a team in the premiership with wingers who are there to go forward rather than track back is not going to be easy.

 

 

full back is a position where you have to do a lot of non glamorous things so you get little praise but any mistake is really exposed.

I suppose it boils down to the age old England debate do you pick your best 11 players or the best players in their positions I'd always go with the latter but I just think Cahill would make a better fullback than Steinnsson or Ricketts and we can have arguably a more solid looking centre half partnership in wheater and knight but I've made my point I'll bore off for a bit now......I've had to post more than usual not having "transfer clockwatches" to keep me occupied.

You're an outlet for players in better positions who don't want to take responsibility themselves. Etc, etc, etc.

Hiding to nothing if you are a full back. One minute you bang in a good tackle and applauded, next minute teams tricky wingers are roasting you and shooting or crossing. Show me one full back that prevents every cross or stops the winger getting past him every time. It's what the centre backs do when the cross comes in. Someone behind me blamed steinsson for chelseas third goal when he had gone on the overlap and wasn't able to sprint back to his position in two seconds

Admittedly some full backs are better than others but do think it's a tricky position

I think it's more that our right-backs are cr*p defensively and we have 3 centre-backs now.
