Was that game not played on a Wednesday afternoon because of the power cuts?, There were loads of us got the cane next day for wagging school.

I think the game played on a midweek afternoon was the cup replay with Southampton. We lost i think.

The Sunderland game was played just after boxing day when Oldham beat us. Southamton beat us 2-0 in the mid week afternoon FA cup replay.

Glad I took the precaution of saving the clip off Youtube, but it doesn't show that Allardyce started his run outside the penalty area for the equalising goal. I like the Reebok, but it could never ever generate an atmosphere like that.

 

Then a few weeks later we had that FA cup game against Newcastle. We were spoiled.

Wolves was epic and pretty much everytime I'm at the match I think christ I miss Burnden.

Well, OK, in two.

One of the best atmospheres I remember was the F.A. cup game against Oldham (when they where a top-flight club!)in about '92 I think,the one with the Paddy back pass that cost us the match after playing them of the park.

I was in the Burnden Stand with my dad and have got to say it was the loudest I'd ever heard a crowd at Burnden,even louder than the Wolves game, but I was down in the Paddock for that one so maybe it was just the acoustics further up under the roof for the Latics game that made the difference. Anyway I went home with my ears ringing from the noise and my heart breaking from the unjust result that day.

We played them on Saturday December 27th 1975, the day after we lost at Oldham. Two games in two days with a squad half the size of today's teams and only one sub allowed. No one suggested having a winter break back then.

 

Edit: If you're talking about the 1974/75 not the 1975/76 season, then you're 99.9% correct!

I seem to remember wagging school for that game athy.

On 5 Live they were on about how Burnden was always full and rocking, it's total bollocks. It probably was rocking when the media went but they weren't there in Division 4, three and a half thou etc. Under Phil Neal, how many memorable games were there? 6 fucking years and what, 99% were forgettable.

You're right, but i think you've got the wrong season.

1973-74...Wed 5-12-73 Sunderland H won 1-0, 8425

Wed30-01-74 Southampton H lost 0-2 21788

 

The Sunderland game on 31-3-75 was an Easter Monday bank holiday game .
