A dream fight, all about tactics, think Tyson would have to take Ali down early, otherwise I don't think he'd be able to cope with the combinations when Ali tires him out in the later rounds.

 

I'd go for a 7-10 round KO for Ali.

I know it's all about opinion but that is a bold statement. I don't think I have ever seen Tyson's name at the top of any "Greatest Heavyweight of all Time" opinion list. Certainly never above Ali, Louis, Marciano, Foreman or even Lewis. But as I said, it's all about opinions.

Bear in mind that if Bruno had followed on with his crashing right in round 1 of their first fight he'd have done him. 'kin 'ell, just checked and that 22 years ago I remember loads of us watching it live at a mates and going mental when he landed that punch. I remember spewing up walking for an early tube the next morning as well....funny what stays with you

Foreman in his prime would have battered him and Ali would have worked him out. Get past the intimidation (I forget which one it was, but one of his early world championship opponents literally soiled himself during the walk to the ring) and the truly greats would have had him.

leonard, for me, was the best showman ever to get in a ring

i love ali and sugar ray leonard but tyson has to be the greatest for me, no one seemed to hit harder, and people were absolutely terrified of him in his prime.

George Foreman and Sonny Liston were ogres. Seen as unbeatable. Ali beat them both. A young Ali would have been too quick and too mobile for Tyson, the older version too clever.

 

Tyson in his prime was fantastic to watch though, and much more than the slugger he was portrayed to be. The head movement, the variety of punches and the angles at which they came in were bewildering for his opponents. Once he was champion, those subtleties started to disappear. They probably wouldn't have done his Cus D'amato had lived longer. Then again, Tyson was never the same after Robin Givens had done with him.

 

Futher down the weights Sugar Ray Leonard has already been mentioned and the Welterweight division in the 80s was something to behold. Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, Carlos Palamino, Wilfredo Benitez and Donald Curry. Magic stuff.

 

I still remember vividly watching Barry McGuigan beat Eusebio Pedroza in a packed out Prince Bill, but the best fight I ever saw was the first one between Alexis Arguello and Aaron Pryor. Recommended if you can get hold of the footage.

Apart from the antics of Ali, Tyson, Prince Nasseem and Money Mayweather boxing is dull as sin.

 

Everyone knows Mayweather only beat the Big Show cos he cheated and used some brass knuckles.

I've got hundreds of fights on my hard drive. For me, boxing is the purest form of sport. Just two blokes of more or less equal physical attributes and nowhere to hide. No third parties like ball, bat or the weather. Just you and him. When the going gets tough, no sports requires participants to bare their soul to everybody like boxing does. And there's more human decency, honour and sportsmanship in boxing after a tough fight when boxers who respect each other embrace after 36 minutes of battering one another than you will see in football in a decade.
