Everybody knows that this is indeed the manager's remit. Some of just disagree with prolonging Gardner's stay being a good use of part of that budget, for reasons previously mentioned. Give up with the cheap Barca-Messi-tracking-back rhetoric - do you honestly think that the money would not be better spent on another option, who might actually be fit enough to play a few games, and might actually add value to the squad?? That's what I'm saying. It's a cogent argument, and, as with all debates, there are different opinions.

Without knowing the details of our budget and other constraints or any details of Gardner's new contract, you can't draw any valid conclusions. He may be on ?3 a hour with a testimonial chucked in then pay as you play and other performance bonuses. You can put it in bold, caps, or word it any way you like, those facts remain.

Yeah - he may be playing for nowt. I doubt it. I'm making some assumptions - the key assumption being that there'll be an opportunity-cost to signing him up (i.e. funds used which could have been reserved for an alternative, a better alternative).

 

Far more pertinent than the finer secret budget details is THE FACT that he has been injury-prone, and when he has played he's looked little or no use. His best days are behind him. Which leads me to draw the quite valid (and personal) conclusion that whatever he's on, it's probably not worth keeping him for the value he's likely to add.
