Was doing my big shop yesterday. Well, as big as a single man with the world's smallest freezer can do, and realised just how much of a snob I was when it comes to shopping.

 

I found that there is very little in the way of 'own brands' that I will buy. Examples of things that I buy that have to be an established brand are:-

 

1 ) Cordial

2 ) Crisps

3 ) Bread

4 ) Beans

5 ) Deodorant

6 ) Ketchup

7 ) Brown sauce (got to be HP - please do NOT insult me by suggesting Daddies!)

8 ) Fizzy pop

 

I'm sure there are plenty more.

 

I'm also sure that I'm spending far more than I need to due to this brand snobbery, but I just know that Tesco bread won't be a patch on Warby's and Asda crisps aren't anywhere near as good as McCoys. Can anyone suggest any own brand products that ARE just as good as the big names?

the trick is to find own brands which are actually named brands at half the price.

 

ie asda anti dandruff shampoo is actually head and shoulders. to be fair thats unmistakable as its like acid in your eyes!

Morrison's 'The Best' English mustard.

Asdas/Tescos/Morrisons (it doesn't really matter as they are all the same) brown sauce. Its the same as Daddies.

Waitrose do a good own brand range.

It's not often I can definitively say that someone is wrong, but in this case Homer, you are 100% wrong.

 

The active ingredient in Head & Shoulders is a special formulation of Zinc Pyrithione. Only Head & Shoulders use this special blend - something to do with the size of the platelets. Other anti-dandruff shampoos (for example made by L'Oreal) also use Zinc Prythione, but it is made using a slightly different process which means it is not as effective.

 

Dazbobparr - ITK when it comes to active ingredients in anti-dandruff products.

I think most of Asda's "Chosen By You" range is pretty spot on if your after alternatives. Their Blackcurrant cordial is effectively Ribena but not ?7.99 for 400ml.

Smart price clingfilm / Durex

I usually by branded stuff, but when I was in Sainsbury's the other day, I noticed that Sainsburys own Crunchie Nut Cornflakes were about ?1.50 cheaper than the real thing. I decided to give them a go and they taste EXACTLY the same. I'm sure some own brands are shite, but this isn't.

Asda's own large Lasagne are quite good too.

Asda 9p noodles are better than super noodles.

 

Im the same with bread, hp, heinz tomato etc in your list. Add to it soups, pasta sauces etc, mince meat has to be the dearer lean shit and not the gristly shite.

 

Fucking food bills dear if I do the shop. I now get the mrs to do it online, she also cook the vast majority of the time so I cant really tell.

Supermarket own brand single malts. As long as it says "single malt" not "pure malt" then you're getting a named brand on the cheap. Best example was many moons ago when Safeways (as it was then) Islay malt was in fact Port Ellen; at the time that was about ?15 and a branded Port Ellen from a specialist shop (Milroys or the like) would have been ?40. This was early 90s, and a Port Ellen now would cost you wel into 3 figures. I wish I'd stocked up

But sometimes you have to have the best though; e.g. Warby's crumpets with proper butter and Marmite XO. Anything else can fuck off.

Speaking of which, I've just bought seven bottles of Jim Murray's 2011 Whisky of the Year at ?54 a pop. I will sup one and auction the rest in a few years. He reckons they'll go for loads. If not, I'll sup those too. Can't lose.

 

Anyhow, a made for Sainsbury's Dun Leire aged 8 years won Irish whiskey of the year for 2011 too. Will be about 18 quid when a lot of others that aren't as good will go for double.

Seriously though, on the crumpet front it's got to be Warby's, done to a crisp via two dunks in the toaster. Tried the same with the Tesco equivalent a few days ago and they were flacid on the inside - nowt worse
