2 weeks ago sister in law bought ?1600 worth of new sofa from dfs after seeing the 0% finance deal on telly.

last week dfs called and said she was refused credit. ah well nothing lost she thought.

on saturday she get a call from dfs, "ok how are you going to pay for the sofa"?

"well i cant" she replied, "i obviously havent got ?1600 hence i went for the finance deal"

they are saying it cannot be cancelled and must be paid for. they even siuggested that she gets the finance in somebody elses name, cheeky cunts.

they said that they do get this situation a lot and usually the customer still wants the sofa and 0% is a bonus.

i told her to tell them to get fucked. but she's getting in a tizz now.

any thoughts? (besides sending envelopes of shit to dfs)

Surely that's not legal is it? (advising somebody who can't get credit to get somebody else to take out credit on their behalf)

Thing is, is it really worth 1600? Do they not bump the price becuase it's 0% over such a many years?

And yes, she needs to tell them to fuck off. If she's near a store she should go in and tell them very loudly to fuck off whilst there's customers in. that normally does the trick.

agreed, the finance costs are obviously hidden in the price.

as too confronting them, she's not like that though, i can see me going down and having to have the "discussion"

i dont think theres any legal contract in place?

and yes, obvioulsly if it was me id be ringing the onbudsman and watchdog etc, rather than asking you bunch of loons.

No No No. She has to do it herself. Tell her she'll feel so much better after.

If she bought the sofa on credit and was refused credit then there is no agreement. Surely it is in writing that it is subject to credit?

I think this might be a minefield, stick 'dfs finance refused' into google and you get a load of listings.

I would think dfs will have the legals on thsi quite tight, the order was made adn they will argue that the finance was a seperate deal

I bet if you check the paperwrok that the order for the sofa will state somewhere in the small print that the order is not dependant on gettign credit

There is some regulation, debtor-creditor-supplier that means if you take fianance as part of the deal and the goods are faulty then this can mean the finance deal does not apply, not sure how it works before the finance goes through.

I would speak to citizens advice they will have examples of when this has happened before and what to do next, going down there shouting wont help.

Unless anyoen has read the small print that goes with the contract they wont be able to give anything other than an opinion.

I beg to differ. It worked with Comet a few years ago. Though I just spoke very sternly, I didnt actually have to shout.

I should have added 'without all the facts to hand.' :)

Did they not credit check her in the shop? Whenever I've bought stuff like this they always do the checks there and then.

How long is the 0% deal for? If they won't budge on the order get a 0% credit card bung the price on there and pay off over the term? Or then balance transfer to new 0% rate on another card?

I quite distinctly heard the salesman tell her that the finance deal was a formality to which she replied "I'm only buying it because of the finance deal"

Sounds like mis-selling. Ring Anne Robinson.

my words exactly.

i even asked her, why did you buy something you couldnt afford.

answer "I'm only buying it because of the finance deal"

eggsfuckinzackly.

do the they have pic of sofa's in the window, or big fuck off 0% signs?

prob both but i bet if you ask anyone what does dfs have signs of in the window, they would say 0% finance.

proper cunt trick imo

dont know to be honest.

0% credit is an idea, but then if she cant get 0%, whats the chance of getting a credit card?

although tbf i dont think its because they have a BAD credit history, its because they have NO credit history.

Impossible to say, I'm no expert on this, but from past experience when I've struggled to get credit for things, I've still managed to get a 0% card.

Possibly harder these days, but if they really won't budge, its worth a look. My feeling is that DFS will say that order is already in production and therefore can't be cancelled. Were it a day or two after order then they may have backed down if you'd pressured them enough.

Pretty terrible trick though, especially as they are presumably not credit checking in store!

yup, no reason why they couldnt do that there and then.

only now, is it obvious why they dont.

All big furniture shops are complete bastuds though. Last time we were shopping for a sofa we found one that was perfect, after weeks of looking, it were ?1800 with a big reduced from ?2200 sticker on it. We were going to buy it, but kids were bored and whining after being traipsed round all day so we thought we'd go back the next weekend minus the kids to sort it.

Went back and the price had gone down to ?1000! Only time the kids moaning, saved us money!
