BURNDEN BILLY Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 A true wanderer, watched him play. Made Tommy Smith look like a Nancy. He still gets to the Reebok Many Happy Returns Roy and many more of them.
MickyD Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 He used to go in Bradshaw Conservative Club. Spent many an hour in his company chewing the fat and just listening to him reminiscing.

Wasn't he a tory councillor for Bradshaw a long time ago? Don't know what is more frieghtening, watching him kicking wingers in to the stand at Burnden or seeing him swinging that silver handled walking cane he now uses.

Casino Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 obv it depends on their health but i'd like the club to get them on the pitch before its too late was great to see what folk thought about nat but would've been even better for him to see it
superjohnmcginlay Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Great point Cas, but folk never know what they had Til it's gone, Happy birthday Roy

Alas, I think he's now confined to a wheelchair.

Lever Ender in L.A. Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I think Nat knew what the folk of Bolton thought about him, and that feeling for the other lads of the 58 team is still there. Your right Micky...Roy is now confined to a wheelchair, and a little bit confused, it's going to happen to us all, but anyone lucky enough to have seen him oh so proudly wear our famous White shirt will be passing down all the stories of him and Tommy handing out "Gravel rash" to any winger who dared to take them on, as Jussi breaks our all time appearance record, he can hardly be mentioned in the same breath as players like Roy, he played 498 games for us and gave everything for that white shirt...I hope someone close to him gets to read what all the old fans have to say about him...what I never understood was how a guy so rough as he was could talk so posh....Happy Birthday Roy...just like Nat, a true Gentleman

Whenever I saw Roy after he had retired, I often wondered whether this mild mannered genteel man was the same full back I remembered cutting opposing wingers down to size. There was one game, I can't remember who against, I was stood in the Burnden Terrace. In the first half Bolton were playing towards the Lever End and Roy was getting turned over by the winger. But as the first half progressed Roy gradually got on top. In the second half they were on our side of the pitch and we saw why Roy was getting the upper hand. The winger had a big gash down his leg where Roy must have caught him. Whenever Bolton played Man U, the united regular left winger, Robert Charlton, was always either dropped or moved to another position and Cantwell always played on the wing against Roy.

According to my dad, Stanley Matthews often developed a mystery injury just before a trip to Burnden.

Mind you I wouldn't have liked to take on Tommy Banks. He was only getting his revenge for the drubbing Matthews handed out to his brother Ralph in the 53 Cup Final.
