The Burnley Away On First Day - Memories

.... anybody else remember the previous times?

First day of 77/78 in the season Ian Greaves got us promoted - Burnley 0 Bolton 1, Roy Greaves winner.

First day of 82/3 in the season both clubs got relegated to the third and Jim McDonagh scored against them in the return fixture at Burnden - Burnley 0 Bolton 0, loads of trouble around the ground.

First day of 2000/01 - Bolton side missing lots of good players suspended following Barry Knight's card-fest at Ipswich in the play offs the year before. Bolton 1 Burnley 1. Frandsen (pen) with our goal.

Was at all three. Good memories.

Not only did not did the dingles not win any of those ... they've not actually beaten us in any league game since November 1987. Nine games in total. Bring it on - I hope we leather the bastards.

First day 77/78 Bolton had a special train for the match, it went via Darwen going and via Bamber Bridge coming back. i know it got a good bricking on our return journey back.

It kicked off like fuck after that game,I got twatted by a Burnley fella at the station..fucker side-winded me as the police horses scattered everyone, bastard flattened me,ended up with a cracking shinner,i ripped my jeans and looked a right pillock..

a copper gripped me on the slope,i said i was only running for my train and i got tripped up!...he let me go! :D

It was probably 77/78 (maybe 82/83 )when  hired a double decker bus for Burnley, but far too many turned up & it was chaos on Moor Lane. Eventually the police appeared & sorted things out by taking 's list & shouting out the names ,which comically included lots of odd nicknames...those who couldn't get on ,caught the service buses & we met up in Burnley.

After the game the double decker went back almost empty as we stayed in Burnley until we were shoved on the service buses home.

Happy days.

77/78; hired by  Catterall I think

went on train,as we were shepparded,by those lovely men in blue, one of the lads got trampled on by a big fuck off horse. He shouted "Do i look like beechers brooke" the copper twatted him with his stick and told him "Thats for taking the piss" Happy days.

Went to Plymouth on one of Lols trips, we left the Wheatsheaf at midnight, happy days

I remember one trip to Cardiff when a copper pulled  and FD to one side and said "Do you remember me we used to go PB on Moor Lane" he stood with them both all through the Match.

Yep. Is that the one that parked up on Plymouth bus station?

Other trips on 's coaches were Sunderland when we parked on the seafront fairground ,& Sheffield Utd when we gubbed them.

Sunderland was difficult, walking up to the ground before the match & Sheffield was difficult after the match. Happy days though.

Fair play to Sheff utd we had a great following and as a 14 year old I remember being shit scared on the short walk across the car park, don't think I can ever remember Bolton getting the better of Sheffield since, in fact they have always turned up at Burnden and give us the run around.

I was at the game in the early 80's, don't remember too much about it other than thinking John McGovern only has young kids at his disposal - all the old players had gone. I think it was McGovern's first game too as player/manager

burnley away 82/83 - first time i was involved in Bolton's mob of lads/casuals.

good couple of hundred gonig up early doors on he train.

81/82 season ended dismally, but over that summer, everyone seemed to spruce up their wardrobes.

all smart as fuck in their ellesse, fila, pringle, tacchini, lacoste, lyle and scot. nowadays every tom, dick and harry wears them, but in those days, only the 'boys' wore stuff like that.

lots of trouble that day,Bolton well on top. match was shite, hope it's a better result this time round

The 2000/01 game some brave Burnley fan celebrated there goal on the concourse of the ESL and got sent flying across the floor with a few trying to jump on his head

2-2 draw up in the third world, David Reeves and TP were up front for us. Peter Adamson (Len Fairclough) at the height of his fiddling trial had his trousers royally soaked in the gents by warm Bolton urine, many streams thereof.

I was actually only 8 when the 77/78 match was played. Remember very well sitting in the Cricket Field Stand - which was pretty much as it is to this day. Don't remember if that was the designated away end that day.

I remember 82/3 better. Don't recall any specific details of trouble but do remember being distinctly aware of it. The comment above about lots of younger players is only partly right, we had Mick Doyle, Paul Jones, Peter Reid and the newly signed Ian Moores in the side that day. That memory about fans wearing smart gear sticks in my mind as well, as does the fact that it was a really warm day - typical first day of season stuff.

it was a scorcher that day.

the advent of Bolton's casual mob was like an episode of The Wonder Years,it was one of those moments you'll never forget.

Bjorn Borg tracky tops and Stan Smiths, quality clobber and quality days

There's a six fingered fooker in the pub with a replica top on about 45 bald typical burnley looking

I think LC had a "run in" with a police horse at Burnley and got arrested for biting it.

Typical Burnley looking, and thats only the wimmin.

They waited for the train between Burnley station and Burnley Barracks as I recall. It was chilly the rest of the journey.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the FA Cup tie - November 1987.

Chaos.

And then more of the same the week after in the league IIRC.

Yes thats right although the numbers were much less in the League game.

Both Nat and their Top Man came on the pitch in the League game to appeal to fans to behave.

Bloody hell - 25 years ago!!!!!

urban myth with the burnley lot that they turned us over big time in the cup match.

they forget to mention that 200 quality Bolton lads were put into the ground at 12-00,so only small groups were in Burnley town centre and getting picked off by their lot.

20 of us were in The Fox and Stork ?,around 80 Burnley came storming in,but we fronted them and they just went back outside, then smashed our hire van up and ran off. Aye,typical Suicide Squad. They weren't too keen after the match either.

Week later in the league 100plus of us tried getting into their end but were stopped at the turnstile, again burnley weren't too keen.

In the return at Easter, when Burnley were spouting the odds, what happened then ? 40 of them turned up hiding in the Bradford Arms, and had to barricade themselves when we turned up. Mind you,the mob we had out that day was huge and very hostile,so I don't blame them on that occasion. A Burnley lad i know said he was outside the Bradford Arms when he saw our mob of 400 running down,a few Burnley came to have a look before the cry of 'shit, get in the pub and lock the doors'

They couldn't believe we tried to knock down the partition under the paddock to get into them at half time. A lot of twitchy arses from Burnlley that day

In the cup game most of our lot were on the terrace on the side and Burnley went into our seats in Cricket Stand behind the goal. Any Bolton fan in there who moved got a kicking.

Wheres Dids he normally shows up with "Pathetic" whenever someone goes down memory lane.
