Northern Quarter

Out for a friends birthday on Saturday in the Northern Quarter, can any of you lovely people recommend some nice bars?

Featured Replies

Most of them.

It's better than Bolton :D

Hula Tiki is as cheesey as it gets for a cocktail or two. Walrus, if you like sleek bars. Pool in the black dog ballroom, which is still surreal that I used to club in there.

Don't feel drawn to the Printworks, please.

Already threatened that if I end up in the printworks i'm going home. We are starting off in Hula Tiki, looking forward to a few cheesy cocktails. Also been told about Socio Rehab, Bluu, Walrus and Keko Moku.

Walrus isn't as good as it used to be but we always get there at some stage.....they play good tunes downstairs...gets a bit sweaty though

Gumbo and I are in the NQ on Saturday night. Going the Blue Pig until 10:30pm-11pm-ish, then on to bars

Socio Rehab sucks balls.

If your getting there early and eating then go to home sweet home. Really nice food, massive portions and very reasonably priced. They have wines available and red stripe on tap so you can start early.

PS - Dont forget to familiarise yourself with the locals handbook:

Start off at Trof then Bluu and make your way up from there.

yeah stay out of the printworks, and just do some exploring and everywhere is pretty good, Apotheca is good for cocktails, allegedly :shiftyninja: and does some great beers, oh and £12 absinthe cocktails, make you nice and merry

Can't add anything to what's been suggested above. All I would say is if you've got any blokes meeting up with you make sure they arrive in groups no larger than two.

The doormen can be utter cunts when it comes to letting in 'gangs' of lads.

We're off to Manchester this Saturday, not a clue which part yet though.

I'm not a leader.

I like Common as well, thats worth calling in at.

Fringe is good too, but thats probably for a different type of night out!

out of interest, when did it start getting referred to as "The Northern Quarter"? - I'm not having it we called it that when I used to go there 20 years ago (in fact, I even had to ask where it was a few weeks back)

Late 90s? Before the bars arrived but when you could get a curry for about 3 and 6.

After the area was 'regenerated'. 10-15 years ago?

It had got a bit grim and if giving it a new name has made it the vibrant place is now is, then fair fucks.

Shame some of those porno shops went though, so some people said. :D

Noho

end up at Lamarrs - can be hit and miss, but mainly hit, though you're probably best ending up at the hula tika place

as jd said, walrus used to be ace, not anymore though

I can only remember Foo Foo's, the old man's pubs on Oldham St and the Frog and Bucket. The only bar was Dry that I can remember.

Early start to the Marble Arch, a few pints of Ginger Marble will set the mood for a great few hours ahead. Back along Rochdale Rd to Angel Street and a pint in the Beer House. Next Stop Smithfield on Swan Street a choice of around 7 real ales then accross the Rd to the Bar Fringe, there they have all the Belgium delights plus a few real ales. The Crown and kettle is just at the side of there at the corner of Oldham Street, an Old pub which once was burned out but refurbished.

Frog and Bucket is a decent pub and the Castle also on Oldham Street.

There are many more like the English lounge, thats accross the rd from the Arndale on High Street. Bar Centro on Tibb Street is a decent place. The Northern quarter is a fantastic place for drinkers.

Thanks very much, around 7-8 ladies only, so no problems with being turned away (well not at the beginning of the night anyway!) just had a look at some of the cocktail menus, I'd best increase my overdraft!

Tv 21's, common, cord, bluu... Great night out

Night and Day Cafe for the potato wedges, if theres no gig on.
