Tennis is a bit odd like that, who the fuck watches it, tournament by tournament?

How do they raise such prize money?

Hang about at Maryland Hill Racquets Club. Think Fanny’s pub but for folk even further up their own arses.

I can imagine

In order to avoid besmirching any racquet club in Maryland, I did, in fact, mean Markland Hill Racquets Club.

I just looked at their website. Tennis, Badminton and squash are on offer. I’m not joining unless they install a Real (or Royal) Court.

I also looked at membership prices. A fiver short of £900 to play tennis and sit drinking Pims with the glitterati of Lostock.

Did you get a joint membership for yourself and Mrs D?

Yes. Call up any time for a snifter. I’ll have to sign you in obviously. No jeans, no trainers, gentlemen to wear a jacket and tie unless the Club Captain allows us to remove either.

@Exiled Girlis probably more clued up than me

She's been pro for what, 13 years? Lots of expenses with being on tour, and she's travelling with her mum rather than a coach at the moment, saving money. She's been promoting her sponsors stuff a lot, Alpapro (?) not-milk for one, recently. She's with Courtney Duffus (Morecambe (?) footballer) currently. She's done better at doubles than singles of late though that's tailing off too. She's still top 100 though, you don't stay there without winning some matches.

£210 a year at my club in SW London, and that's the going rate round here. That includes social membership for partners. Plus it doesn't rain as much as in Bolton.

Not too bad at all that, folk will readily pay that sort of money for a gym membership.

Eagley tennis club starts at £60 according to their website.

Not unsurprising that some still paint a picture remote from reality, which is sad as its the sort of thing that will put kids off.

No different to a lot of other sports, where some clubs are more exclusive and others less so.

Markland Hill lot could improve their parking though!

There used to be 12 courts and a putting course on Haslam Park, looking on Google Earth they all seem to have vanished or been turned into parking

At one time we went on them to "cut the grass". In other words strim the weeds which had overtaken the all weather surface.

Good result for Cam Norrie today, getting into his 1st Masters 1000 final at Indian Wells, that's  the level below the 4 majors (Wimbledon etc).

And anyone on Heather Watson watch would have been at the Bolton Arena this past week - she's been training there.
