Local Words That Are Descriptive

Bolton has loads of local slang words that are really descriptive... just can't think of one just now but a northern one is "mither" which perfectly describes a bothersome twat

Scotland has too.... without looking it up what does Scunnered mean?

This morning's Leyth word is "faw" as in "don't make me faw owt with thi"

Another one, my stepfather hadn't a clue and had to get me to translate when our lad said "mons hons" the other day

It's another language rather than the odd word.

You even had to explain that one to me the other day and I live with one of them!

skriking for crying, as in " he's skriking his bloody eyes out"

it's interesting that this part of the world was once part of the Danelaw, ruled by the viking lot, and the Norwegian word for scream is "skrike" and lancashire dialect use the same word to describe loud crying, must be a left over from those days.

well i suppose interesting is probably stretching it a bit, but you get the point.

My ould fella still laughs about the first night he was in Bolton, and heard someone ask " oI cock, where's bloody piss stones in here?" he didnt have a clue what he was on about, thought th ebloke who was asking was the foreigner and says it took him months to find out the gentleman in question was asking for directions to the toilets

"Do you want a skop?"

Jazza, I'm originally from the same area as you, well Kirkcudbright, I would say you are referring to a game of darts perhaps....

Aye.. he wanted a game of arrows.

he took a tenner off me if I'm not mistaken

Wonder where big Daz is now... probably still in The Bush

boltonbhoy... you still in Kirckudbright? Or you moved?

That's just reminded me of one - numb as a piss stone

Hurts like buggery. A common enough phrase in these parts.

Astley Bridge mate, unfortunately I reside with Ashey off here and his Mum, I'm sure he'll read this and report back to her

Season ticket in ESL, used to go to Palmerston back in the day mate, in the days of Jimmy Welsh, Buster Oakes, Bobby black etc etc

Was in the same year at school and lived very near to George Cloy who you'll probably remember as being a stalwart left back for QOS

I know Geordie Cloy well, he lives near Beeswing

He always got booked and I asked him once why... he replied he wanted hi name in the newspaper reports.

Jock Wallace once said of him "if he loses 3 stone that lad will play for Scotland"

I was a Palmeerston regular until Willie Harkness threw promotion awa in about 1984 when I became disillussioned and foung this other shower of shite who gripped my heart

He played centre forward when at primary and Kbt Academy in the same team as me, scored an absolute bag full of goals, think he got picked up by Queens when playing for Greystone Rovers on a Sunday in Dumfries. Converted to a fullback, very slow but was talk Celtic wanted him but it never materialised, played full back in the school rugby team as well, had a clearance on him like a mule !

I believe he's managing in the SoS League now, maybe Swifts or Heston, somebody like that. I played at St Cuthberts Wanderers many years ago so played a lot round Dumfries, Annan etc

Ginnel for small pathway. There's loads of different colloquialisms for that one I think.

Called the little un that yesterday, missus had never heard it before.

My other half calls a ginnal a vennel, that is the north east though, so she's wrong, I'm right.

Around teesside they say are you gonna come through or they came through. Meaning they came to visit or are you gonna visit. They're pretty much Scottish anyway though so no one cares what they say. Not a local saying as such but I'm always getting grief for the way I pronounce bus and church. Apparently that's the big thing for telling if someone's from around Bolton

The other half is Scottish she's always having a dig at boltonian saying but then has terms like

Outwith - no idea!

Dirty midden- again not a clue!

Wee yin??

Buckled??

Aye, skop means throw.

outwith ... never heard of it

Dirty wee midden is exactly what anewman will be looking for in Benidorm as we speak :)

edit: a "midden" is where a farmer stores his manure.. a dirty wee midden is a lady of low morals shall we say

Just looked it up and apparently is means outside something or not within something.. I still don't get it.

buckled is a great word.... it means 2 things... literally it means bent or twisted... ie with a bicycle if you hit a rock you get a buckled wheel.... or the slang meaning which I hear quite often... "away hame, youre buckled" which means "Go home you're pissed"

Does your wife say "wee yin" when you go to bed at night?

just wondered?

You even had to explain that one to me the other day and I live with one of them!

I think yours has gone all posh since he moved up to HTown ;)

Not heard " Chorved " for ages, meaning aggravated, or " Chorving " to aggravate people.

Ha ha! I use that one. "Stop chorving the bloody dog, you nob"

I like that one, never heard it before though, my mam would always use "plague" instead - "stop plagueing the dog!" or "you don't play with her, you plague her!" (non-sexually, I might add!) :)

I think I'm now of the age to be able to use 'cocker' with regularity an' all, so that will go after 'chorve' in my mental vocabulary rolodex...

No jazza, she says my boabys boggin!

Carry out

As in "let's get a carry out, hey"

Derry talk for let's get some booze in from the off licence and get shit faced before going out.

There's quite well known local saying round here that goes like...

'Give me your phone or ill stab you' in a really heavy Glaswegians accent.

It's a bloody belter.

Scrawp. As in scrawped knees, shoes, elbers.

Don't speyk wi thi cock hangin out

Clod is an underused word.
