Great cross, and really good to see him playing.

And although the result was 6-0, it was 1-0 at half time so it really could be that he changed the game.

Fifth touch for the cross ain't bad though.

No arguments there

I love Holden and it's great to see him getting a rave review, but I'm not going to get too excited just yet...he was probably more tested in games for Sheff Weds last season

I hope this is the road to recovery that we've all been looking forward to - that goal reminds me of Holden at the top of his game a couple of seasons ago; coming from deep, little one-twos. Please please please come back fit and raring to go.

Holden would get the nod any day of the week over Spearing (if we were to sign him).

He can have as many shinners as he wants if sets up goals like that every week. The signs are looking good.

Oh fuck :)

Just watched second half of the match (forgot about it ). Anyway looks like Stu Holden is getting back to being match fit,he had a good game, picking things up around centre circle and stroking it around sometimes short sometimes longer but looked confident.First touch a bit poor on a couple of occasions but can expect that at this stage.Took his goal well,a run into box and a knock down to him. All in all he looked to be getting back to something like,if he carries on progressing like this he will be back.

Agree with all that mate

Came on at half time and played centre mid of a 442, or you could probably say a 424

First 10 minutes he sat deep in the quarterback position picking up the simple passes and spreading it about. After that him and the other centre mid were switching more. One sitting and the other going. There were plenty of positives but also a few negatives.

POSITIVES

His position play was superb (the majority of the time)

His timing into the box for the goal was Holden of old. He had another great chance to score around 70 minutes. Arrived late into the box for a free header but put it a couple of inches wide (should have scored).

His passing was superb. As Brianzz said, both long and short (although Klinsman did bollock him for trying a beckham/gerrard through ball instead of keeping it simple)

Broke up the play plenty of times, then gave a simple pass to start the next USA move.

NEGATIVES

His first touch really was poor. I reckon there was 15+ occasions. He got pretty annoyed with himself for it on one occasion as he would have been through into the box

Dunno if it was because of the opposition/fitness/confidence but he never really looked at full speed if you know what I mean. On the transition from defence to attack and attack to defence he was fine most of the time. There were a few occasions though where Belize broke whilst Holden was in the forward position and he was a bit slow in getting back. This happend two or three times, but hopefully its just fitness and nothing more.

All in all, a good performance where he showed plenty of class on the ball(when he got it under control) and glimpses of the old Holden. On the other side, he isn't there yet and theres work still to be done.

Come on Stu

Nice write up garrpo.

Aye, thanks for that.

Going only from Garrp's write up; the negatives there sound like a lack of "match fitness" and sharpness rather than any general fitness / knee issues

After so much time out that's the last thing to come back normally and hopefully will do with practised game time. His peripheral vision, opportunity to get his head up and take the first touch without thinking takes a while of being in those situations normally...

Therefore overall, I'm optimistic given what we've read. Come on Stu!

Aye, hope it is just match fitness although I was wondering a few times if it was a confidence thing and him not want to go gung ho and risk 2 and a half years or hard work, which is understandable.

Like I say, I hope it isn't that.

Donovan's now got 50 assists for the MNT.  Woo, yeah!  USA, USA.

Nice write up though, thanks Garrpster.

A question for garp were the fuck is the quarterback position.
