Cyclist Deaths In London

Getting a lot of airplay down here this. Seems like Boris is under the pump after doing more for cyclists than any previous Lord Mayor, Had to listen to some commie prick from the Greens this morning wanking on about limiting London traffic to 20mph. FFS, it will be an even more congested nightmare.

Question - are cyclists in the UK utter cocks like we have down here? One second they are a cyclist then, suddenly, a pedestrian crossing is favourable and they are suddenly a pedestrian only to mount the bike again at the other side and often scream down the fucking footpath scattering people. A particular problem down here with cycle couriers.

Not sure what the answer is but to keep battering the ordinary motorist certainly isn't. One thing I do know, bicycles and HGV's do not mix. Only ever going to be one winner if they clash. Cyclists are generally stroppy cunts here anyway. Not well loved because of their efforts to avoid daylight saving for their own selfish reasons rather than the good of the state and nation.

  • Maybe they should think about licensing cyclists in the same way as other road users.

  • You probably need to get up here of a weekend before you start making sweeping statements like that

  • I saw some stupid bint in a Fiat 500 go through a red light last week, she'd clearly fucked it up rather than going through on purpose. Other than that it's a very rare sight.   Our office overlooks

5 deaths in 9 days suggests your fucking mad to want to keep riding your bike in. Cant really comment on London but Manchester feels like an accident waiting to happen too. In an ideal world they would get their own tracks/routes. How feasible that is? I don't know.

The vehicles in these five fatalities were two HGVs, two buses and a coach. I dunno whose fault these five incidents were and SOME cyclists don't help themselves but as one myself, I guarantee it is not in my interests to do anything to risk a collision with anything motorised. HGV drivers are the worst people on the roads and the people most likely to kill cyclists; it's a bad mix. If some sort of segregation between heavy vehicles and cyclists could be acheived in big cities that would be to everyone's benefit. As a cyclist (admittedly not in London) I don't want to mix with big vehicles and I'm pretty sure they don't want to mix with me. On road cycle paths don't cut it in big cities.

We should do what the Dutch did and everyone's happy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuBdf9jYj7o&list=TLlO8eA9wSkK83HCHu76tL9ZxN_uDTZLqy

If they stuck to the rules of the road like stopping at red lights and not riding on pavements then they may get a bit more respect from drivers.

Also stop riding three abreast on country lanes.

Oh, well clearly they deserve to die.

The riding abreast thing is to prevent the patient and courteous driver from having to do two things - first, having to carry out multiple overtaking maneouvres in  short space of time and second, to cut down on the amount of time the driver has to spend on the othrer side of the road. If they were not riding abreast you would have to wait longer to get past them in one go because it is rare you can see far enough up the road to know it's safe to overtake. They're doing you a favour.

Dressed like power rangers. .

I fkin hate wagons, crash causing cnuts

Anyone driving up the inside if a high sided vehicle wants their head examining. As if to prove this I saw Boris yesterday riding on the outside of traffic as that is where you should be overtaking. Isn't the average car speed in London in single figures anyway?

Oh, well clearly they deserve to die.

Where did I say they deserve to die and you seemed to have not commented on the red light jumping or pavement riding.

A car will pass three cyclists in a line quick enough not to cause danger and why is it rare to see far enough ahead?

What comment is there to make? There is no reason for a cyclist to jump a light or ride on a pavement and I wouldn't defend those who do - though I bet more people are killed on pavements by cars than bicycles.

Because this is Britain and our roads undulate and are bendy. They're not all like the A1 - and it was you who referred to country lanes, which by definition are more likely to be bendy. If you want to overtake three bikes in a line, you need to be seeing much further ahead of you that you would for overtaking two abreast.

As Boris said, cycling is safe in London and getting safer (deaths/journey have halved in 5 years)

It never ceases to amaze, though, how they get away with playing along with their own version of the Highway Code

Only driven in London a couple of times, not much fun. I wouldn't cycle in Bolton, I take the paths to the park, avoiding main roads.

The cyclists in Manchester are fucking lunatics. One cunt the other day cycling up Liverpool St which is pitch black, dressed all in black with no lights. Other cunts cycling down the East Lancs when the pavement is a designated cycle lane. I wouldn't cycle under Irlam Th'heights roundabout for anything. There's a proper cycle lane on Chester Road, the cunts still go across the Mancunian Way roundabout.

I only take my bike on paths round Rivi, its just too scary for my liking.

There's some proper knob head cyclists, skipping red lights etc but the same goes for car drivers I'm afraid. I can't believe the risks I've seen people take to save a couple of seconds. I'm happy to say I'm a coward on my bike, anything over the size of a car i keep well away from and don't overtake at lights. I've ridden in London, what shocked me there was the cyclists are off their heads trying to race you everywhere. Even the old ladies

I cycle to work most days which is a 20 mile round trip into Newcastle. Never have any bother with motorists but what I hate are the miserable bird-faced cylists who don't let on or even smile when you pass them. Maybe it's because I ride naked?

It's already limited to 20mph in some London boroughs, Islington for one.

There was a survey which said that the average speed of traffic around the centre of London is lower now than it was when most of the traffic was horse drawn carts.

How many points for a cyclist in Death Race 2000?

Oh, well clearly they deserve to die.

I don't think any one deserves to die on the road, cyclist or not.

So 2/3 abreast riding up a hill at 5mph for 1/2 mile with (non patient/courteous) drivers getting increasingly frustrated behind them is a preventative measure by cyclists for the benefit of the car driver?! How very noble.

I don't ride a bike (too unfit these days) but when driving I like to think I'm a safe, and courteous, driver. That does mean on occasions taking a pragmatic view of the fact that the larger vehicle on the road would most likely make a bigger mess of me than me of them and assessing whether squeezing up the side of a vehicle would be a wise thing.

I almost wiped a cyclist out at traffic lights when they changed because he tried to overtake me on the inside as I was turning left, with indicator on. Luckily I spotted him and stopped and the car behind didn't run into me. He had a rant at me for almost knocking him off and appeared more concerned that his group had carried on without him when he got stuck at the lights.

There are good and bad drivers and cyclists on the road but there does seem to be a large number of cyclists who think they are immune to laws of the road, don't have respect for other road users or don't possess the necessary hazard perception skills required to drive on the roads these days.

The same applies to the increasing number of mobility scooters on the road. I saw one at dusk the other night with no lights trundling along Blackrod bypass!

Cyclists, just like motorbikists are, as a rule of thumb, cunts.

I'm sure there are the odd exceptions out there, granted.

They just seem to think because they have two wheels instead of four they have their own rules of the road to adhere (or not) to.

Maybe they should think about licensing cyclists in the same way as other road users.

but the problem round here is you can't get past them full stop

They come up here of a weekend and think it's their personal holiday retreat not somewhere we have live in all the time with stuff to do

I work in London and some poor sod copped it at the bottom of the street I work on last year, massive cement lorry with a bike utterly mangled underneath it was all I could see

Half the time it's HGVs turning left without realising there's a bike beside them

Many of the cyclists around London are utter twáts without doubt, breaking rules left right and centre, but the vast majority of deaths are not related to rule breaking, but rather unsighted drivers of huge vehicles

Why don't cyclists pay some tax?

Has anyone raised the "they don't pay road tax" argument yet?

Why would you be wanting to overtake something if you couldn't see the brow of the hill you're on? If I'm a cyclist and I ride in a way to indicate that it is not safe for me to be overtaken at that point in time then that is my right. Halfway up a hill the brow of which you cannot see, appears to me the perfect time to do so.

Sorry, but they're as entitled as you are to be there. The mistake you have made is to assume you have a right to overtake. You don't. Nothing anywhere says cyclists, charabancs, cattle or anything else have to move for drivers.  Deliberately riding obstructively is not the thing to do obviously but trust me no-one deliberately rides in a way to create a long line of angry motorists behind them.

Most motorists in this argument simply don't understand that It. Is. Not. About. Them. The few extra seconds it might take you to get past a cyclist is a minor inconvenience at worst; a too close, too fast or bad overtake is a near death experience for the person on the push iron (who you are demanding move as close as possibe to the kerb to avoid inconveniencing you). How about you give some consideration to the more vulnerable road user rather than them having to adapt to your being in a rush?
