They'd have been better with Begbie in charge.

In what way?

Making them feel that they can break away when there's no chance?

In that they are the largest party in the Scottish parliament and that he has succeeded in bringing a referendum on which probably about 40% of the population will vote in favour. No SNP supporter will be looking forward to when he's gone, it was near obscurity following his first stint in charge. Personally I tend not to take a shine to those who try to break my country apart.

on about it on question time now, doubt it'll be as informative and interesting as on here, but may be worth a watch for those interested

Love Question Time, except when Baldrick or anything Scottish are on.

Audience is rubbish compared to last week and its full of Scotchers

I heard something on the radio the other month when they were talking about the oil and gas fields. The "expert" who was on claimed there was still shit loads of oil and gas left there, it's just not so easy to get to now. His belief was that the big industrial rigs will have to go shortly and smaller specialist companies will move in to extract the "hard to get to" stuff - it's very expensive to get out of the ground, but with the ever increasing cost of oil they think it will make it viable to keep drilling for another 25+ years, although on a much small scale.

Anyway, if the porridge-wogs do get independance and claim the oil feilds, can we not just go to war with them and steal them? - how are they going to stop the might of our armed forces - chuck a load of scotch eggs at us and play the bag-pipes very loudly?

It's arguable but in my limited opinion I reckon there's 40+ years on UKCS rather than 25ish

All E+P kinda very much depends on the price of crude, but probably only as to when rather than if, due to "cyclic" economic demands, unless hydrocarbons are made redundant somehow

(Thinly veiled something or other...) I was in a midsize operator's HQ in Europe this week that are in the process of acquiring a company for their asian assets for approx $2.2 billion and even they have about as much clue as we all do on what's left where to a certain extent. They're not North Sea but the point is the industry is still flying

Because of this loads of folks want to be roustabouts etc and there are loads queuing up for it and Gonzo there will be saturation at the lowest common denominator like every "fad" industry

But as this will boom and bust more rapidly, the continual requirement an fight for O&G and therefore actual talent / real skills experience, will continue for years and years

The effect on Jockland, hmmmmph. Depends on loads of things; what will taxation etc be and therefore attraction of the talent for a start?

Basically the whole picture is far too complicated for "we have oil we'll be reet" or otherwise

Nicola Sturgeon favvers like she smells of farts and shortbread biscuits - or possibly shortbread biscuit scented farts.

Has anyone else noticed these Nationalists are all operating under fish-related monikers?

Alec Salmond, Nicola Sturgeon, Hamish Anchovy, Wee Scotty Periwinkle?

We're a Union, I'm British...I didn't even know what the England flag looked like until the Espana '82 World Cup...

It's a bit rum some of these Nationalists spouting off about Independence from their abodes in Chicago (Irving Welsh) or Martinique (Sean Connery), some of the 'Piss Off Jocks' camp have kind of invalidated their opinion by basing themselves outside The United Kingdom too.

Spot on Youri. Fucking overseas based wankers shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion. Hang on a minute.....................................

To be fair, nobody will be swayed by your baffling "Let 'em piss off, they can have Wales as a leaving present" opinion... :)

Some deluded Jocks will probably take great consideration of the opinions of Highlander and Begbie...

Irving Welsh even claims his 'Nationalism' was forged due to spending, and enjoying himself thoroughly in the process, a good proportion of his youth in London - now he's pissed off to the USA yet still feels qualified to pipe up (a crack pipe probably, crack-cocaine laced with Buckfast and cheeseburgers in homage to both his roots and new home).

Eh? Hast thou confused me with someone else?

Apologies, it was Smiffs who mentioned the Taffs...

This reads pretty conclusively in favour of letting them [the jocks] piss off though...

You don't need us and we don't want you. Fucking great - everyone's a winner.

There's a reason they won't let the English vote - because they know it would be a fucking landslide to get this centuries old millstone from around our necks.

If the scotch "win", but aren't allowed into the EU, do we have to kick out all of the resident scotch?

You do need to grasp the concept of winding them [the jocks] up my friend.

I do have family up there and would have no problem relocating them and my many bluenose friends into England. In return give them the industrious persons from Pakistan and then rebuild that fucking wall as high as is humanly possible  ;)

I'm disappointed, if there's no Union, then there's no Union Jack, if there's no Union Jack then there's no permanent reminder to those gobby Colonials* exactly where they're spawned from...

* Not you Bolty, you're a Colonist, not a Colonial.

You're a nice lad Youri. It is the Union Flag.

'Colonist' worries me. Unless spoken so that one can grasp the intonation, it could be misconstrued in the written form as having an unhealthy interest in the colon. Can I be a Crusader instead?

Coincidentally,I have an Aussie mate down here (called Mick West - changed his surname by deed poll for obvious reasons. Mick Head. Has a nice ring to it  :D ) who ran an organisation for years called 'NUJ' - No Union Jack. Had some beltin piss takes with him and his mates and, fair play to em, they fucking loved it! Besides pointing out the flag v. jack thing, one of my best was when I was with 52 of the fuckers going to Rosehill races in Sydney. Obviously, sledge the Pom was the order of the day - right up my street. After they had petered out and gone relatively quiet, I said in a booming voice "Look lads. I actually agree with you about changing the flag" (cheers all round). "We just need to get rid of the shitty blue bit with the stars on it".Loud guffaws and empty beer cans rained in my direction

This myth raises it's had every so often, surprised you are on of the ones that goes with the "it'sonly jack at sea" etc given your obvious pride  in it. Royal decree and parliamentary approval in 1908 states the union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom. To call the flag the union jack is correct, to say it should only be called jack when at sea is incorrect and a popular myth. it can also be called th union flag but this dosnt make using it's official term wrong

The term jack probably does derive from the admiralty (though no one can be sure) and possibly the origin of the mis information/confusion, but the satute books and parliamentary records state, the flag of the united kingdom is named the union jack which was laid down and approved in parliament in 1908.

When the taffs were ballooning on about their tourist board, librarians, and traffic wardens becoming their welsh government about ten years back, and all the horrible things that it would bring England, the UK, nay the stratosphere

Fuck all happened apart from more road signs went up in welsh and they became even shitter at football.

always think it strange that they have our flag on theirs

always think it strange that they have our flag on theirs

Not really, we did invent them after all.

The old (until 1965) flag of Canada also featured the Union Jack, incidentally, we've had a 'Canadian' Prime Minister, Arthur Bonar Law was born in New Brunswick and spent the first twelve years of his life there, then he moved to Scotland, later to become our second best tennis player and Prime Minister...
