Nowt to do with the breed.

In the 80s it was alsatians, then Dobermans then Rottweilers, now it's bull terriers.

Its the dog choice of scutters, who can't control their animal.

There have been plenty of cases where the owners of dogs that have attacked have been responsible and not scutters.

Trouble is, when you've got a dog that was designed and bred to be hard as fuck then when they do flip they'll do a lot more damage than your average mutt.

Don't leave your dog alone with kids if you have a vicious little fucker.

I'm not having this was a one off

Exfuckingactly. I wouldn't even trust our cat near the baby. The sly fucker.

See, thing is this could well be a one-off, by that I mean it's the first time it ever did it.  Let's be honest, when a dog like that attacks, especially a small child, then there's only ever going to be one, tragic outcome.  Had it done it before it'd have been destroyed.

Think it killed a cat previously.

I mean it being a vicious fucker. You know when your dog is, and like Blondie, I'd not leave a child in a room even with my ball of fluff

Maybe not but it is to do with having potentially lethal animals around children. You put your stair gates on, cover your plug sockets, but leave your kid with a dangerous dog?

Why keep dangerous animals as pets at all?

It just seems absolutely retarded, the proliferation of these dogs is a really depressing, shite aspect of our culture that has emerged this last 20 years IMO. Can't take your kids to a park without some spastic having these dogs tearing about the place.

The staffordshire bull terrier is one of only two breeds the UK kennel club deem as excellent with children.

Jsl.

Yet to meet a vicious staff / pit bull.

No puns but I come into contact with a lot of pets and removal man is normally enemy numver one.

Too easy to blame the breed when 1/3 dogs are terriers.

I think staffies are fantastic dogs.

In turn, you can do the same.

It makes my blood boil when my 4 year old is happily playing in a park and along bounds some dog towards her that is her height, jumping around and then the twat of an owner goes; ''Don't worry it won't bite.'' at that point I always say, I don't care, it you don't move it away I'm going to kick it in the face. I didn't ask for a mutt to come over and scare the kids witless.

The only good dog, is a working dog. Failing that, a dead one will do.

The point is when a Staff, rottweiler or other breeds acts to their instinct, then they invariably attack to kill...

This is where it differs from a nowty smaller breed who'd merely maim, if that's the right term.

Bit harsh seen as how you were bordering on making love to my dog the first time you met it. I remember you drunkenly flinging your arms around it and then trying to roll it on the floor before acting all surprised when it growled at the stranger who had stumbled into the house and was now manhandling it!

That said, we always keep the dog on a short leash if there are kids about. I think it's pretty irresponsible to let them go galloping off unless it's pretty quiet.

My advice would be to try and introduce the kids to dogs slowly. If they get frightened and scream, or run, a dog's likely to chase and that will make things worse. Best thing you could probably teach them is to fold their arms, stand still and look away.

Please don't teach them to kick one in the face!

We've got a Rottweiler. They weren't bred as attack dogs, they were herders originally and were also used to pull carts. If we take ours out off the lead and walk in different directions, she'll try to round us up by running around us in ever decreasing circles!

They also have a strong chase instinct. When she was a pup, she one chased after a fully grown ram whilst we were walking her up on the moors. She chased it all the way down the hill until the ram couldn't escape because of a fence. Then she just crouched down near it and waited for us to catch up.

If she'd been bred as an attack dog, we'd have had problems!

Sure you've heard it before.

"there's no such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners"

I'm reading that article & thinking, Yep.

Jsl.

Our staff cross and the in laws staff are great with the little man. The parents spaniel is a grumpy bugger with him.

I like dogs (not as much as cats) and have had them all my life.

my mum has 4 now

my sister has one

so im in no way against dogs but this thread reminds me of AmericanWays discussing guns.

no one is saying don't have dogs

but to say they are of no danger whatsoever  to children is ridiculous.

that line crawley wrote really fucks me off - ''Don't worry it won't bite.''

A guns sole function is violence though. I reckon a better analogy would be having access to a fast powerful car. IE, don't let any old twat have access to one.

In terms of what Crawley said, if my dog ever did go bounding up to a bunch of children, unlikely as that might be, I reckon I'd probably involuntarily say the same thing. What else could you say other than 'I'm sorry' and provide a bit of reassurance that the dog just wants to have a sniff and then move on?

I totally get it from a parents perspective of course. Your instinct is to protect your kids and some strange beast, no doubt frothing at the mouth, bounding toward your offspring is obviously going to trigger a caveman reaction. I imagine I'd be the same if I am ever blessed with children.

A slight flaw in your theory, you're not a feral wanker.

I refuse to have any previous drunken behavior held against me in a reasoned WW debate.

Personally, if any owner lets their dog run around off a lead where kids and families are then I believe they are fair game if they come near. I shouldn't really have to be the one amending what I do or 'training' my children how to behave around dogs, it should be the other way round, surely.

As for letting them chase livestock, not sure that's such a grand idea either.

I like to think not. I'm all in favour of stronger licensing for large dogs by the way.
