He managed Forest at the meeting of Champions in 78/9, in the middle of their season-long unbeaten run. There was a first day cover for it.

78/9 in Div One: Bolton 0 Forest 1 and Forest 1 Bolton 1. Bolton almost won in the latter again, Forest equalised in the last second through Trevor Francis. Would have been a remarkable win given we only won away twice that whole season and Forest were reigning champions.

79/80 in Div One (Bolton's relegation season): Forest 5 Bolton 2 and Bolton 1 Forest 0. In the home game (in March) we'd not won a game since September. It was only our second win of the season! Neil Whatmore scored and the Bolton goal was under siege in the last 10 mins.

 

Quite a few Cloughie links with our former managers: John McGovern, Colin Todd, Roy McFarland. I think Megson played under Cloughie briefly as well.

The only change was O'Hare being replaced by Archie Gemmill.

As a youngster my saturday job was that I used to work on the groundstaff at Burnden (best job I ever had to this day!!). Part of my job was running the sunken baths for full time.

 

Anyway one day Cloughie turned up with the reserves (including a young chris fairclough). I was late running the bath and when the team came in at full time I was still in the bath room. Cloughie gave me a right ear bashing including lots of use of the phrase 'young man'. I got out sharpish.

Makes it an even more Incredible achievement. Clough was a very good manager.

My favorite line is had kept calling Teddy Sherringham Edward, so he politely said, 'It's Teddy, gaffer' to which he replied, ''Right you are, Edward''

My dad, big bloke, ex-army, never went to a match again after that. He had started taking me as a young kid that season but that day put him off for life.

 

So sometimes when the older folk on here go on about the fun and games in the 70's I think they are a set of bastards for all the matches I could have gone to with my dad. 

It was wild that day, if I remember correctly they brought 2 specials full. I was outside the Happy shop when they reached the ground.

Cloughie was a great manager and as a Wanderer who has lived in Nottingham since 1978 I hold him in the highest esteem

 

He achieved great things with Forest and they played great football too. There was talk of him coming to Bolton when Leeds sacked him and replaced him with Jimmy Armfield. Can you imagine that? Gemmil, O'Hare and McGovern ploughing through the Burnden mud and lifting the European Cup !

 

He was a great listen on the radio and on TV

I remember after he retired and in relative bad health he was on a local footie phone in (Century FM before it stopped broadcasting down here). It was a great piece of radio, hosted by local journo Darren Fletcher, he had Nigel there as his minder making sure he didn't make a big none pc quote.

 

Forest v Bolton matches are always a big day for me although I've never had much to smile about watching the Wanderers at the City Ground. One win in 30+ years !

 

There's a statue of Cloughie in the centre of Nottingham, I always give him a nod and an 'all right Brian' when I walk past him (see below)

Was it a point? Memory must be playing tricks. I thought we missed out on goal difference (thought it was the first season for the introduction of goal difference). Bolton had one more game to play and Forest had already played there's we had to win to go up and we got a draw and thereby missed out. The season before we missed out on goal average.

when we got stuffed by notts county 6-0 i was sat in their stand right at the back. halfway through the first half i turned round and brian clough was sat right behind me, cap and collar up on his coat trying not to be noticed. he even winked at me.
