I see both sides.

 

Private landlords across town in central Blackpool are borderline criminal. Their tenants live in squaller as its the only thing they can afford. Single women with kids living with no hot water or central heating. Their properties left to rack and ruin for years meaning the place looks like a shanty town.

 

To me there needs to be more done to prevent rogue landlords operating.

 

On the flip side we had a family of scrotes in our house that did one leaving a wrecked house and owing thousands.

If rent was paid direct to landlords again then DSS tenants would go from being unwanted by many landlords who have decent properties but have been burnt in the past to wanted as they are the safest bet of all to get the rent on time

 

This would give DSS tenants some real buying power and drive the slumlords out of business

 

I would also pay gas, electric & water direct too. Give some food vouchers to make the difference up

 

That way it incentivises them to take jobs so they can earn money and spend it how they like.

When we first let our house out we got the rent direct in our bank from DSS. It was perfect. The lass we had in loved it that way. Everything was spot on.

 

Soon as she started getting her hands on the loot first that's when it all went tits up. Giving a totally skint nob jockey £600 in her hand just before Xmas could only spell disaster. And it did.
