My next door neighbour is a sweet old woman (droopy - unable to accurately assess) and while we were away last week had some work done on her house. Gutter resealed in 4 places where it was leaking. While this guy was up there he told her her chimney needed repointing so she agreed that he should do that as well.

 

Charged her £280 - but the whole job took 90 minutes which seems like too short a time for me. She also said she didn't hear any drilling or equipment being used to knock out the existing cement. Added to that her gutter is still leaking.

 

Basically - does this sound like she's being ripped off? Or is 90 minutes enough for that kind of job? Chimney is on a 2 up 2 down terrace house in Halliwell so not massive or ornate.

 

Thanks in advance but I know nothing about this kind of thing.....

Thanks Traf - he's going to have to come back whether or not to sort the gutter out - but I've told her I'll come round when he visits. Just want to be forarmed with a bit of info.

I'd have expected a bill of 500 to 1000 for a chimney repointed depending on size etc and it to take at least half a day.

 

And usually, if it's cheap, it's shit in the building world.

Sounds like he's shoved a bit of gobbo over existing mortar and blobbed a bit of silicone on some gutter joints.

Kent, to repoint a chimney stack correctly, he should have ground out the existing mortar. I imagine as Gonzo says, he's just gone over the existing mortar.

 

If the conman says it was too dodgy to grind it for fear of crumbling bricks etc, tell him to get fucked and he should have also quoted to repair any blown or perished bricks.

 

I can see Traf's logic on pricing to be honest, as due to HSE shite nowadays, a wraparound scaffold should be used on repoints of chimney stacks, but seldom do they get used privately and away from the main road.

A lot of one man outfits do it from a ladder and not scaffolding.  He's definitely not raked out the old mortar.  Either way, regardless of price, he's a cowboy.

Did you see that roofer in the paper the other week when he was fixing flashings to the stack and fell off onto the bay below before rolling off the bay into the rockery below and knocking himself unconscious ?

It was ironically on Slaters Lane.
