Grammar Schools

Not sure if this has been brought up but I can't find it if it has...

Where do we all stand on this??

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about, when I went to school (1995-2000) we were split into different sets for subjects based on ability. I.e maths set 1-7 (1 being the best and 7 the worst) so that you didn't have someone really good being held back by being in the same class as someone poor at it (and visa versa)

Surely grammar schools are just the same but grouping by district as appose to just within a school?

Also, as it stands to get into the best high school in Chorley (St Micheals) you have to go to church every week ffs. Same with the best primary schools. It doesn't matter if your Catholic, Jewish, Muslim etc etc as long as you attend every week and get your stamps

They are only doing this as they know a parent willing to go to church every week will also put a shift in teaching at home

I'd rather have an 11+ system / Grammar schools than the current system of faith taking precedence

I'm just off up to the church to tell the old folk attending (many would have lived and fought through WW2) that they're mentally weak

While you're at it, tell all the finest philosophical minds the quandary that's foxed them since ancient times has been resolved as well - 'Why do people act the c*nt to others?'

It's obviously religion, case proved conclusively.

I agree with what someone else wrote, that some of the outlook and viewpoints of the anti-religious, it's bordering on dogma in itself...It makes the contrarian in me feels like praising God aloud (or beezlebub) and banging a tambourine. It's at times as superior and obstinate as many religious standpoints are.

It is a debate which needs to be made though even if it isn't changing people's views. You are seeing this only from your own religion which I understand as you believe in God. Do some research in the role of religious studies which are allowed in this country's schools though. Impressionable and sometimes vulnerable children being indoctrinated. If it was taken out of the education system I'm sure it'd still go on in churches/mosques/temples/synagogues but at least the one saving grace would be that it isn't at the tax payers expense.

I always had doubts about the stories they told, what sealed the deal for me was when they showed us abortion videos, including the gory aftermath.

Made me think, 'this is a bit of a cunt's trick, surely doing this (showing horrific stuff to kids) is against the rules?'

As an aside, when history's greatest monster, Peter Kay, did his autobiography, I skim-read it in Tesco, solely because I was certain, him being older but attending the same establishment, would make mention of the experience (being shown abortion videos) such was the impact. He did.

I'm pretty sure we fought world war 2 to stop people discriminating against other people's beliefs. If you want to belive there's an all conquering badger in the sky and send your kids to a school teaching that then go for it. The vast majority of faith schools are harmless. Some nun walking mount st Josephs isn't recruiting for the IRA. If someone finds comfort in a god so what, doesn't make them weak let them crack on.

RE was always the piss about lesson for us.

Funky Firth had no control, One lad set a fire work off in her class once :D

You managed to get past the mind control of religious mumbo jumbo? Wow :)

My sister (two aspirins/ironing board) reckons they (the nuns) used to make the school pray for Bobby Sands. JSL.

Do you not think he needed praying for? He held beliefs that included killing people and was pointlessly committing suicide. Simon the zealot was one of the apostles.

Nah, it was 'Bobby Sands is ace, let's hope they let him off and he wins the lottery (when it's invented)' type of prayers.

There's a big difference between being taught religion and being taught about religions, and people are getting their knickers in a twist over nothing, can't be live people truly think that in places like Thornleigh, Cannon Slade, mount st Joseph's etc that kids get taught that science is bunkum and God really made the world out of ash and fig leaves and a blokes rib.

There is religious ethos and basis in the school, but it doesn't affect the education in anyway.

How do you compare Darwin and creationism?

This is my main problem.

I don't want my kids being told that God created this planet when it didn't happen.

Some of you religious types still might think he did, but he didn't as there's no such thing.

I don't mind kids learning about religion as its a part of life but I certainly don't want them being told lies under the guise of some bullshit stories written in a book.

You may embrace science and think creationism is a mental concept but what about those who don't? Then there's the ray guns teaching the Koran is word for word what their God said and do mustn't be questioned. The Jewish schools who actively discourage pupils from socialising outside their circle. How do we police these religious schools? Why should we use resources to police these places? In many cases it's not working and may be churning out kids with GSCEs. Fucked up kids like but they've passed their O levels.

That's the point I'm making. It doesn't happen, I wouldn't want that either would you want your kid not being told that some people think it's true though? And so not being aware of that and other issues of religion ?

Agree with all that, but those that don't are not usually the schools but the parents of the pupils

Can't speak for the Jewish schools but just my experience of Catholic secondary schools.

Would agree any school teaching as fact , that Adam and Eve were real and the earth is 3 thousand years old needs shouting down but my experience is that they don't

I reckon early exposure to organised religion can act as an innoculation to indoctrination. It allows kids to organically realise it's all a load of old bollocks.

I'm of the opinion those brought up heathen have a chink in their armour that leaves them open to 'spirituality' filling any future void they may feel.

I've known a few who've gone God squad in later life after being brought up 'rational' - the added downside being at this stage it's usually the overtly 'Join our club, tip up your whack, cheques acceptable' strain of religion that does the minesweeping.

I'm just off up to the church to tell the old folk attending (many would have lived and fought through WW2) that they're mentally weak

Good lad. Enjoy.

I'd prefer re to be an option for those who might feel that understanding what different religions are may be of use in a profession. Hopefully by then they may be mature enough to appreciate the flaws and drawbacks of religion and not have it forced upon them as the be all and end all.

Anyway don't understand why this constant reference to grammar schools as only being for wealthy folk. I thought they were for those with a certain level of academic ability irrespective of background.

Moreover for those who may have had an off day aged eleven, opportunity existed to change school later if it was shown to be justified.

I'm also sure with modern assessments a more balanced entry system could be made, to reduce additional coaching benefits.

What a load of tripe. You and others talk about peddling this religious nonsense but I can't help feel the 'nonsense' side is as vocal and agenda pushing as the religious do gooders you speak of.

You probably get an hour of religion at school a week including faith schools. I fail to see why this triggers such emotion in a lot of folk on here.

I'm not massively religious but can't see the issue with folk having something to believe in. If not then that's fine too

You're entitled to your opinion. Sounds like your view is that others can't have theirs.

Religion is an outdated form of controlling the masses in my view. Not needed any more - especially when mass murder is committed in its name on a regular basis.

You crack on with your hour a week though pal. Light candles, chuck your change in the collection tray and rattle your beads to your hearts content if it makes you feel better.

Do you actually know whether you are Arthur or Martha?

You come across as a fucking fruit loop.

Haha. I don't like others having an opinion? Really! Aye ok. I'm not bothered who is in to religion or not, I dislike strong opinions on both sides as often they are moronic and one sided.

As stated before. I'm not a church goer but no plenty of folk that do and are good folk whose faith is a personal thing to them that does no harm to anyone.

I also know people who have had bad experiences of the church and respect their right to dislike it.

What the fuck are you on about (again)?

Poor man's Richard Littlejohn.

Your posts are so fucking convoluted I can't make my mind up if you're for or against.

Clear enough?

As long as you 'no' your 'knows'. I can't think of a better argument for increasing the number of grammar schools. Well done.

Couldnt agree more on increasing grammar schools.

I can appreciate concerns like No balls, regarding teaching of fundamentalism etc. whilst disagreeing with blanket statements like the religious are weak-minded or motivated by a fear of mortality.

I apologise unreservedly if this doesn't tally with your sometimes black/white worldview.
