Grammar Schools

Not sure if this has been brought up but I can't find it if it has...

Where do we all stand on this??

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about, when I went to school (1995-2000) we were split into different sets for subjects based on ability. I.e maths set 1-7 (1 being the best and 7 the worst) so that you didn't have someone really good being held back by being in the same class as someone poor at it (and visa versa)

Surely grammar schools are just the same but grouping by district as appose to just within a school?

Also, as it stands to get into the best high school in Chorley (St Micheals) you have to go to church every week ffs. Same with the best primary schools. It doesn't matter if your Catholic, Jewish, Muslim etc etc as long as you attend every week and get your stamps

They are only doing this as they know a parent willing to go to church every week will also put a shift in teaching at home

I'd rather have an 11+ system / Grammar schools than the current system of faith taking precedence

Can't understand how in this day and age religious schools haven't been banned.

  • Would people want pupils not being taught about religion at all in School? If so, and religion is banned , how then do you teach history? How do you compare Darwin and creationism?   There's a bi

I believe all state funded schools should be open to all and the only requirements for entry should be that it is within your local district and in the case of Grammar schools that you attain the required exam results. RE should remain on the curriculum though as a historical view of how they came about, cultural differences and how to respect their customs and traditions.

Thankfully millions of people disagree with you and welcome RE as an integral part of the cirriculum.

Religious education as in learning about religions and the cultural affect they have on us i have no issue.

My experience of RE in a church school was 2hrs a week trying to get the kids to learn the bible word for word.

I interview a lot of graduates

There appears to be a general rule that many of those grads who were grammar school / privately educated seem to believe that the world owes them something just for turning up

everyone i know from my yoof who went to grammar school turned out a right not reet

I can appreciate concerns like No balls, regarding teaching of fundamentalism etc. whilst disagreeing with blanket statements like the religious are weak-minded or motivated by a fear of mortality.

It's not just the fundamentalist viewpoint though, I think someone else mentioned previously it is in what context it is taught in.

Question to any parents, is humanism, and to some extent, atheism get as big a billing as the God type stuff? Religion isn't just about the big bloke in the sky but their core values, some of which jar with a secular society.

I think a lot of people have a negative view of the relevance or importance of religion from their own experiences at school. Attempting to understand anything, let alone religion, by reeling off passages word for word without any appreciation for what that means in life is nonsensical. Any subject taught properly can be engaging and inspiring but it sounds like your schools paid lipservice to RE and probably got the Maths or Physics teachers to fill in where they could.

It's the people who have massive self belief, even when actually they're not very bright. Which also doesn't stop them commenting on subjects they know nothing on. I can spot privately/grammar school educated people a mile off.

A massive part of learning is knowing what you don't know.

As I've said before on these threads, the most successful people I know, all earning well over £100k a year left normal comp schools with fuck all.

Life's what you make it.

Good eduction obviously helps but it's far from the be all and end all.

Our peg started as a waitress earning £200 a week after bailing from hairdressing college. She was running pubs 7 years later.

I went to private school and I'm happy with my lot.

And seeing as half of this has turned to religion, my 94 yr old nan goes to church every week. Fit as a fiddle she and very sharp.

Mentally weak? Give over.

My reasons are quite simple. If you wish to practice a religion then good for you, attend your favoured church/mosque/temple whatever. There are more than enough about to choose from.

State funded schools are there to educate our children and are paid for by us tax payers. Therefore I do not think it too unreasonable for any child to be ablessed to attend any school in their area.

Millions of tax payers want their children to go to faith schools so why can't there be a choice of schools, faith and secular? That will keep us both happy then

has anyone mentioned safe spaces yet ?

Please no, don't get me ranting about that :) They're looking at stopping it in the US. Let's hope we follow suit here.

I apologise unreservedly if this doesn't tally with your sometimes black/white worldview.

I welcome alternative views to mine matey - this is a banter section.  It's just that often, in your case, I haven't a fucking clue what you are on about or which side of the fence you are on.

No apologies necessary. Meandering witter is just your style.

I see the 'weak mentally' comment is being misconstrued by some.

That comment applied to peoples views on what happens after life and nothing else. Clearly, there are some extremely bright religious people - some so bright that they have been well remunerated bricks in the building of multi billion dollar gold laden industries out of their 'faith'.

IMO religion is a crutch for people who can't handle the fact that, after living, we turn to dust and that is the end.

All we have to do is decide what to do with the time we are given and make the most of it.

This with bells, whistles, flashing lights and fucking loud foghorns!!! Perfect Bolty, just perfect!!!

And yet here we all are on WW :-)

I believe they should be accorded certain freedom to teach what they want to an extent - and this should also be limited, for example, Creationism has no place in State schools. Pussyfooting around leads to potential scenarios like the Trojan horse schools you mentioned previously, the teaching of religion should be as closely monitored as say numeracy provision - and shit like showing graphic abortion footage or instilling hatred of 'Western' society etc. should be eradicated.

As an aside, if someone's bollocks beliefs are personally affecting me I always show scant in the way of tolerance. Boarding a plane last week some arse was strolling like Lord Twat in the park on Sunday in one of those narrow corridors whilst his poor powfagged wife pulled their handluggage behind him at the prerequisite five paces - more fool her and their prerogative I suppose, except the half of the passengers in front of them had already boarded and were enjoying drinks whilst the rest ambled slowly behind this farce, she was acting like an NFL blocker for him and despite being aware of the mass behind wouldn't break the regal pace of hubby or breach the five paces. A softlad (English) in front of me refused to overtake them, despite my exhortations, so I barged past him, excused my way past the downtrodden lady, then elbowed my way past five paces nobhead whilst muttering about 'fucking chattel' and 'we're not'...I felt heroic and Moses-like as the rest of the passengers followed my wake. :)

I think what we are made from, how we are made and what we end up as are amazing. That could be celebrated as much if not more than a superior force being in charge. Do they teach this in high school? If not, I think they should if religion must be.

Meandering witter was once my stock-in-trade, so...

As for the fear of the Afterlife, or lack of, it's the point of death or thereabouts that concerns me, when rationality must often go out of the window...I expect belief or lack of belief, childhood (and lifetime) indoctrination and influence and all number of factors come into play.

The notion that the rational will calmly embrace death, sound in the knowledge they've had a good innings is a false one imo.

That goes for the religious too, I'll bet there's conversions and recantings and revelations and allsorts amid the hallucinations at the time of death.

A cheery thought. :(

  A bloody good point sir!

Now then.......The Queen (who I know you like) - she's the Supreme Governor of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith.......so she surely must "believe" that there is an afterlife, otherwise it would be a bit off to hold those positions.

I know how much you like and admire our Monarch..........do you think religion is a crutch for her, and she's mentally weak in her belief of an afterlife? If she think's it's a load of old bollocks, then she could easily say so, and relinquish the religious element of her role surely.

:blum:

Of course I'm taking the piss, but........it is interesting to see how our Monarchy, of which some approve, is massively entwined with religion. I think she generally refers to God quite a lot in her various speeches, and I think part of the coronation ceremony involves promising to maintain the church..........Should the Queen be taking a stand and distancing herself from the Church?

It's not QE II you should worry about, but her likely successor....
