Away Days 2016-17

An absolute vintage season & will remember it for many years.

Some numbers;

13 games.

1,800 miles travelled and almost as many pints sunk.

11 new grounds with only Bramhall Lane and Port Vale being repeat visits.

1 poster urinating in the street outside a mates house after I dropped that mate off.

The most memorable game has to be Port Vale. In recent times we have had to watch enviously teams like Boro last year bring thousands and have that momentum to drive on to victory, well it was our time for once.

Most surprising was Chesterfield, lovely market town with good boozers that our ex-pat Derbyshire resident found for us. And Bradford is the new Huddersfield, a few of us are heading over there this summer for a piss up with no football match to interrupt it.

There were shit games but why dwell on them when you can remember the feeling when Wheater scored at Vale!

Class night.. weird place though. Seemed down on it's luck to put it nicely.

I agree with the above. Swansea is bleak.

Worse than Middlesborough? That place is grim.

Swansea?

Great for a weekend; stay on the Mumbles

But...........it might be Hull instead

Fuck Hull!

That 2008 away game was quality

The 2009 one was fucking horrendous.

After 5 years of bloody hard work, endless returns home with only tales of escapades to report ,this season was a complete turn around.

Yes we still set off for most games before 7am.

Caught rattlers from Manchester around 8am.

Embankment still lost at cards to Mr Smith .

Ashburner Street Market Fish Stall managed to go walk about but still sober up in time to catch the train back.

BUT we watched a winning team that put effort in and made us feel we had finally got OUR club back.

My highlights.

AFC Wimbledon. Proper old school ground.

CHARLTON. River Boat up the Thames. Finding a Millwall pub ,4 buzz stops

away from the Charlton's ground.Grumpy Bat being soaked through by a exploding bottle of water which a very brave Charlton fan chucked as he left the tube train.

BURY, The amount of police , unbelievable !!!!

COVENTRY. Last minute equaliser . The Old Windmill Pub. ( biggest pork

pies in the UK.).

BRADFORD. Fighting Cock.

FLEETWOOD. Total team performance.

SHREWSBURY. Best pubs , Old boys turnout and without doubt the finest

collection of barmaids in one town. Massive Result.

PORT VALE.(1) The pride and the passion, total devotion from our fans.NOT

a prawn sandwich in sight. Champions League my arse ,that

reaction when the ball went in was an expression of what

football means to a true fan .

PORT VALE (2) Worse for wear Casino on Piccadilly train station still

trying to find out Ashburner Streets true identity.

Better luck next season pal !!

PS, Special mention to Sputniks jacket, once again worn for every away game for the 5th season running no matter the weather . And surviving being chucked in a bin at Greenwich only to be rescued by a big issue seller , who on inspecting it ran down the street to return it too its rightfull owner.

Aye. It was a good do to be fair. I wouldn't rush back

Update.

Sputnik has just reported jacket has been retired.

New one to be purchased for the 2017/18 stability season.

I went to a conference at Swansea Uni in January 1969 - first time I recall seeing signs in Welsh.

Travelled back on the train and with Bill Slater (Woves FA Cup winning captain in 1960) as far as Shrewsbury, but all he talked about was his wonderful gymnast daughter. Nowadays she is Director of BBC Sport, which makes me feel old.

Also went by coach to a track match in 1974 - 5am start from Stretford!

Thats exactly right - always sticks in my mind that. (didn't he take a shine to the ticket lady on the train ?)

Longest and grimmest train journey ever and the place isn't much better either.

Games was rubbish - but decent kebab on the way home..............................

????????yes he was giving her some charm on the way back, tbf she calmed it down it could of got very ugly

Yes I had the misfortune of going to Swansea about the a decade ago although from what I'm told it has got a lot worse since. The place has been destroyed by the loss of industry and then a heroin epidemic which persists today even in the young. I'd still say Newport is worse tho

Shrewsbury was best away trip for me. Realised we were back.

Walsall and Rochdale were awful.
