I think we had a lot of draws at home that season,  a top goal scorer would have converted some of them  into wins.Peter Reid injured for most of the season would be the second most important factor.

Nail on head there - when you think of the amount of goals Worthy and Gowling scored in that first season.

The fall out bewteen Frank and Greaves for not coming back from playing in the US seemed to start the rot, quality players also injured and the little money we had was spent on likes of mcnab and cantello who were disappointing then the sacking of Ian Greaves who had motivated and created a team spirit and a will to win was the final straw, away followings were poor the following at Old Trafford was in stark contrast to the year before we only had the central portion of the scoreboard and we were lambs to the slaughter as the Bolton public quickly lost faith, as a 15 year old it was the first really grim season I'd witnessed, car crash of a season and was the pre cursor to a terrible decade for BWFC, for me personally in those 10 years I must have gone to nearly every game home and away even though we were shambolic the small group of die hards omehow kept up the spirit of the club and did not let the flame die.

When Mc Nab twatted Brian Flynn was the only highlight, and hearing news in another match against Forest that DMB had got beat 6-0 at Ipswich.

Worthingtons close season in the US definitely affected his form when he eventually came back.

His goals in that first season was the reason we stayed up.

Still think he was the best player I've seen a white shirt though.

* A remarkable response from the Bolton public in the second half of a game at home to Bristol City just before Xmas. 0-1 down at half time the fans suddenly out of nowhere decided to recreate the brilliant Burnden atmosphere of earlier in the 70s - and were rewarded with a last minute Roy Greaves equaliser.

That City away game was the first time I took one on the chin at a match. Was still at school back then and I told everyone I took the kippax.

Think it was also the season when Norwich brought just 10 fans for a Tuesday night match.

 

Pretty sure we won 1-0, approx 10k on at Burnden that miserable night.

i know paisley lost a lot of my respect when he moaned about us spoiling the scouse fans night out by not letting em score 4 or 5

IN answer to put-down comments about Bolton’s tactics in earning a goalless draw against Arsenal at Burnden Park, then Wanderers manager Ian Greaves famously (in these parts) said: “If you want entertainment go to the Palladium.”

If that was the 0-0 at Anfield, there was only a poor turnout from Bolton,  darts were thrown into our corner & then after the game some Bolton fans were attacked in the park. Not a pleasant experience.

 

I also lost any respect for Bob Paisley after that match for his whining about us holding on for a point instead of just playing into their hands.

We went down in rock bottom place in 79/80 because we were shite that season, we only won 5 league games and managed just 25 points from 42 games.

The next 10-12 years were incredibly grim.

Yep ... very low gates that season and by Spring often below 10,000. The Bristol City game was incredible though. If ever there was a case of the fans being a 12th man that was it. Of course they were our jinx team in those days too.

A fair few teams have followed our 78-80 path in staying up the first year and going down the next. You have to think the momentum of the promotion season carries over but this only lasts so long.

Didn't do the 0-0 at anfield the 3-0 the year before put me off spent the whole game with my snorkel up on my Parker because few weeks earlier the scousers chucked a dart which landed in a United fans head, wasn't for the feint hearted Anfield in the 70s.

Yeh, I was at that. Two of us got serious grief walking across the park - but then ducked into their Paddock rather than be shepherded round to the away end by the locals who were telling us what they'd do to us when they saw us coming out. Bunked out early - and sure enough a long line bloody nosed fans (regular fans not after any trouble) ended up back at the coach a bit later. Horrible place.

I went to the 0-0 with 3 of my dad's mates, we got jumped outside the ground by a gang of scallys, however a couple of unfortunate scousers took a revenge kicking in the side street when we got to our car.

We drew at home against Liverpool in 79/80 as well. Dalgleish with a late equaliser in front of the Lever End. Season before they walloped us 1-4 at Burnden and we barely touched the ball. At least some things improved from 78/9 to 79/80.
