School Trips

We were lucky to get a day to the zoo or seaside etc...

Junior has just sent me a message asking if she can go to China!

No, I'm suggesting the school budgets for the trips as part of the running costs. Bet we'd soon be back to Chatsworth House and Speedwell Caverns if the schools had to pay.

I don't follow, sorry.

So, say 100 kids and 10 staff go on a trip that costs £250,000 to arrange.

Who pays what, and why?

I'm not a fan of teachers per sé, but I don't think they pay to give up part of their admittedly too long holiday quota to supervise kids in a strange environment.

Yes, they're having a bit of a jolly too, but if they had to pay, there'd be no trips.

So, if there are 10 free places, the teachers should get them IMO.

I'm not sure, which is why I asked  :blum:

if so, that's a non-starter, as 250k buys a lot of chalk.

A good few years ago I managed to get on a school trip with my daughter, down to the Houses of Parliament. Great trip. I'd signed a document saying she could go and joking put at the bottom, should they be short of adults on the day I'd be more than happy to join them and assist. 2 days before I got the call. Was a great day out. And being addressed as "sir" from the young un's gave me a proper buzz!!

Got the little "plump" kid sat behind me on the mini-coach. He'd ate his lunch before we've even left Bolton. Needed a piss half hour later. Then mithered me for the whole journey as I tried to listen to music on iPod.

Some of the young girls did save me some sweets and cookies.

If anyone ever gets the chance to do a school trip as a responsible adult, would highly recommend.

PS. I didn't pay anything (surprise, surprise), even had my tea paid for.

The problem with most school trips is that when you book for large groups you get a number of free places. Rather than divvy up the cost of the freebies to help reduce the cost, the supervising teachers use them. Now if the school see an educational benefit from this kind of trip, surely they could budget for the teacher's fares.

Cheers E, I was beginning to think I was typing in Cantonese or something. I really don't know how I could make it any clearer than saying the teachers fares ought to be budgeted in from the school coffers rather than the kids paying the trip costs plus a percentage of all the teachers' fares.

But you also said that the teachers were taking the free places.

Yes I know. My point was that if every 20th place was free then the cost per child would be lowered by the actual cost of the freebies, not raised to accommodate the freebies.

40 kids each paying £1000 plus two free places for teachers gives an overall cost of £40,000

40,000 divided by the actual amount of folk going on trip (40,000/42) = 952.38. A saving of nearly £50 per child if the school actually budgetted for the teachers to go.

schools that cant afford books wont be paying for trips to china

The school isn't poor, but your point is correct.

No school will fund a teacher to go on a trip, because the money could be spent elsewhere for the good of the whole school.

Oh and paying £2100 instead of £2200 isn't going to be a deciding factor on whether kids go.
