Is this implying that because of Brexit/us leaving the EU our electric has risen more than most?

I don't think there's any implication needed, other than that we're being shafted on our energy bills since July '21

Oh yes we are being shafted alright But when you’re comparing against the average of 20 odd other countries combined its more than likely going to look worse. There was a similar graph showing gas rises, however when you look into it there was at least 10 other countries that had higher rises than the U.K. the graph (showing as EU) didn’t reflect that.

If cheese would have posted the full article instead of the selected graph the reasons we pay more is mainly because of lack of storage for gas meaning we have to buy at spot price and that we are more reliant on gas than most EU countries… the steep curve will flatten out once truss announces the help. Also remember that any additional government help comes at a cost to tax payers (or business windfall tax) it’s not free money.. the graph doesn’t show that cost to the tax payer just the headline price.  Sorry to bore you as I think you might well know that.

The (mainly) Tory voter in me wants Truss to defy every expectation in the book and somehow refloat the ship that Boris sank.

But nothing I can see from her record suggests anything other than a woman massively out of her depth.

I get a Megson vibe but I’m hoping for a Rioch- like result.

Surely she'll need 8 weeks to settle in, redecorate Downing St, get fitted for her hi-viz and hard hat and generally fuck about a bit first.

And Labour landslide incoming.

dont forget a trip to Ukraine

Why didn't the current PM "announce the help" to sort all this out?

Think is more to do with us not having a functional government for the past six months.

Its not just Truss, its the useless cabinet that can only be assembled. She has about two weeks to do what normally would take about three months, the party don't support her, the public feel as though she's been foisted upon them and we are about to enter into one of the worst winters in living memory for huge swathe's of the population.

She is fucked from day one, and the only enjoyment is watch her hubris deflate over the next year and a half.

I wonder when the public will finally wake up to the fact we've been dry bummed by a party for its own ends (collectively and individually) for 12 years. They've taken without any improvements to the country and left it in a shambolic state.  They've feasted on the corpse of a global recesssion to push through ill-thought out, ill-measured and ill-concieved economic plans that have hit the poorest and then blamed them for the position they find themselves in and doubled down on it by picking at the scab of this social division to the point that places that have been left high and dry by the conservative economic policies vote for them as they dog whistle turkey's into the voting booth on Christmas Eve.

They deserve nothing but contempt for the way they have treated the public and this country, they have sold the UK by the pound for individual agrandissment, seeking to reduce the state to such a small part of the public realm that we now resemble some sort of hunger games plotline going into this winter, and then have the arrogance to spuff platitudes all summer about how they are going to fix the mess they made.

Indefensible by only the most loyalist who seek to blame 'the meeedia', 'the woke, 'the liberal elite' for all the failings that are laid down at their door. Never in our lifetime have we had such an incompetent, witless, vapid collection of vampiric narcissist's seeking to lead this nation, those who seek office not out of a desire for public service but as a guilded path where their own limitations are covered up by self-regard.

We deserve better, but we don't demand it. We have become a nation of political illiterates, where tribalism rules over logic, where history is locked up and the key thrown away, where upsetting someone you disagree with is more important than heating your home. Soverinty over sanity. Place your money on the Conservative Party getting another term, England's still dreaming.

This is wholly unfair sir, and you should withdraw it at once! Hold your criticism of the last dozen years until Truss makes an announcement about something in a few days or weeks or months or whenever.

Yeah - it was a little knee-jerk. Best give them another 10 years and then make a final judgement. The UK wasn't built in a day, and by that time I might have actually got to see a GP and not be cooking my breakfast on a BBQ.

So how does that explain many European countries having their gas prices increase more than ours?

Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, to name a few, all in the EU all paying more for gas. But yes let’s call it grasping at straws.

To be fair to cheese, he showed a graph about electricity prices, not gas. There we are in 2nd place just behind the Czech Republic.

We are tenth in gas prices according to this article.

UK use more gas than other EU countries to generate electricity, that was another reason we are at a disadvantage.

Yes and government after government kicked the nuclear can down the road to the point we are at now. Left with a skewed energy supply mix and over dependence on gas. To then shut down storage capacity of your most required energy source was a great idea...

You’re a Tory you should know. 😉
