Queen Liz departing has taken a bit more shine off our fading star.

She gave us good soft power in that she was a living icon of a time when we had an empire and were a world power.

Whilst no one wanted her dead, it was really unhealthy for us to cling onto a fading idea instead of developing culturally in ways that we should of. Hopefully this will now force us to become a modern power, grow and bit and stop always looking to past achievements for our collective touchstones.

Our children's generation don't have grandparent's who fought in the war, they should acknowledge the past but not let it constantly define our idea of what nationhood is. Its deeply unhealthy, as I say and it's best we remove this collective shackle and grow up a bit, learn we need to work with an compromise with other leading nations and finally start putting to bed the English Exceptionalism that blinds us to the realities of the world.

I agree with most of this. 

I still think we're struggling to redefine ourselves as a post colonial power. 

I wish we could. There's so much to be proud of about this country. I just don't really feel like anybody has been able to articulate a convincing vision of where our future lies. 

I was hoping one might emerge post Brexit - but it seems we were desperate to get out, but didn't really have much clue about what to do once we were.

I think in the longer term, Brexit will be seen as the death rattle on our idea of a colonial Britian, on indeed possibly what Britain is. Its not just about the economic realities but the sense of ourselves - and how the country has divided on this issue, which is more about what should our place in the world be moving forward, and why it was tied up with the feeling of a changing world, being left behind and therefore wanting to 'take back control'.

Its an interesting one, because really its about how you measure 'influence' which can be cut a million ways depending on what you want to prove or disprove.

Influence isn't really quantifiable by any set and agreed upon metric.

😊 I also think you are a bright lad and also agree that we all have differences of opinion. I think peoples political opinions can detract from what we as a country are and how we are seen in the world. Don’t let this governments failings be a measure of the country as a whole. Every country has political problems. European more than most. 
I’ve tried in the past to point people in the direction of the east instead of focusing on the US.

We've just witnessed an example of Britain's place and effect in the world, and I found it fascinating that unlike other places post empire, weve not been witnessing mass unrest, and indeed the commonwealth is growing.

A nice little history lesson by one historian on one of the queen's passing programmes. 

We've still plenty of clout if needed, but the main ways to influence others is to get ourselves successful and be pioneering in all sorts of ways.

Too much soul searching and hand wringing over past events and we're at risk of never moving on.
