My lad loves princesses, my little pony and other 'girls' stuff.

We've allowed to have pj's and socks with the characters on but said no to other clothes due to the fact he'd get picked on.

 

As you might imagine ive no issue with John Lewis removing the gendering on their kids clothes.

 

There's plenty of boys clothes I'd not stick him in.

Serious point here, offering gender neutral is not about making kids gay or question their sexuality but about breaking down inherent stereotypes.

 

Did anyone see that program on BBC2 recently - it showed how many stereotypes are already in kids heads at a very early age. Quite scary really.

 

Finding stuff that isn't overtly girly or boyish for kids is far harder than it should be. We're reinforcing gender roles in kids from far too young an age, and the reality is those roles are not representative of actual life anymore.

 

Of course it can all go too far, men and women are different, biologically and otherwise and some who choose to pretend otherwise are wrong. Equality has to go both ways, women seem to want it all one way...but my point is that early years dramatically shape how kids think about things. We can do better than we are.

Some lads over the summer wore skirts to one school in protest over having to wear long trousers in the heat. Kids are pretty tolerant nowadays and I think within reason we should be careful to ensure that they aren't prejudiced early in life.

 

My problem has been where for example in some schools, boys must wear ties but girls didn't have to. That sort of stuff just seems inherently unfair. And does nothing to promote equality.

I'm aware of the first two points. But if shit carries on like this then it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that some daft bugger will kick off against a schools policy.

I watched it (I think?!) - was quite interesting but full made some quite big leaps and conclusions, imo.  Sample size and culture (that surrounded the school) needed to be considered more than they were.

 

Even got into a 'heated discussion' with my Mrs over it 

 

Working with kids day to day it provided food for thought but a study done in Denmark iirc (somewhere in Scand anyway), which promotes gender neutrality in children more than anywhere else, found that boys and girls still gravitated towards gender typical roles as adults - startlingly so . . .

 

I'd be interested in why that is rather than showing that if you give girls building blocks they develop spatial awareness better than previously - common sense really!?
