Buying a bike

Doing lots of cycling on and off road but using a heavy Halfords bike that’s past it’s best and looking to upgrade, where’s the  best deals for bikes and what should I be looking for to replace it?

Go a proper independent bike shop who will advice you on what you need and not Halfrauds who will sell you some shite. If you are looking for a road bike I can recommend Specialized but make sure

  • Think cycle to work scheme is still in place Save you a fair bit if your employer can be arsed

£96 off a £400 bike, just registered our business for the scheme, I’ll take it from there.

I'm thinking of doing some cycling if the lockdown continues but not had a bike since my Raleigh Chopper. What size frame so I want, I'm 6'1 no idea what I should be buying. Dont want anything too expensive as I'll probably thrown it away after lockdown

Depends on the bike but this could help:

https://www.evanscycles.com/help/bike-sizing

I went for a hybrid which for you would be X Large 21-22"

It doesn’t help that some bikes come in sizes S,M,L, XL, and others are measured by frame size. At 6ft 1 i reckon you’d be fine with a Large or a 19” - 20” frame. Remember that you can raise/lower the seatpost & handlebar stem for fine tuning.

big ride for me tomorrow somewhere

stepping up from the usual 20 mile route

well spotted, didn't even notice that, those wheels wouldn't make it to the end of the street with me on them 😛

are these any good?

looked online and 58 will fit albeit it on the smaller size.. anything bigger is like rocking horse poop

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Canondale-synapse-Carbon-road-bike-58cm/164250680852?hash=item263e1a7e14:g:-fcAAOSwSwte60~Q

That looks a very good bike at a decent price. Local too for pick up.

My race bike is a Canondale, I did Ironman on it last year. Canondale traditionally do Great bikes. And the one listed seems like it’s been looked after well.

I love mine - it gets more love and attention than my car.

Uni Bol have ordered 1000 bikes for their students to get around.

Perhaps a wander down some central back streets and the croal in a few months will yield the opportunity of a free bicycle.

Nice order for some company.

I know, I thought exactly the same.

People who make these decisions aren't spending their own money though.

You can't safely raise the stem, you can buy new ones that are raised and you could also replace the handle bars. Makes a massive difference.

Every time i see this thread the song starts 🤬

So reading through this thread and being a total newbie to it all, look at around 800 for a good starter and not from Halfords try to go through a small independent retailer?

we signed up to the cycle2work scheme so might take advantage of it?

I got mine from Decathlon 3 years ago and it's been great. I use it a lot too.

Good shout. Great shop that

I bought a mega bike from Leisure Lakes, a Kona Roast should have been £800 got it for £600 as it was ex display, it was put together beautifully. Then some cunt stole it. I highly recommend leisure lakes

It’s always worth asking if they’ve got any models from last year. Every mountain bike I’ve bought has been the previous years model. Once saved £500 on a Marin that had been minimally upgraded. Current Trek Mamba was a £200 saving

Most shops have very little left..

Second had bikes are selling for not much less than new ones are in the shop.

Really? Suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. Wonder how many of them will sit idle in a shed when this is all over and folk return to normal working?
