1979

Randomly recorded and just watched ‘Top of the Pops: The Story of 1979’

For those of an age there’s some memories there!!

Rubbish piled on the street. ITV on strike when there were only three channels on TV. Shit cars like the Austin Maxi

Music wise - some half decent post-punk bands like The Skids and Gen X, utter tosh like The Nolan’s and The Dooley’s, absolute belters from Nile Rodgers and then you had the saving grace of The Clash, The Police, The Specials and Madness. And the weirdness of Gary Numan

John Noakes on Blue Peter, Tom Baker as Dr Who, Tomorrow’s World

Desperately trying to get into pubs at 15 (mostly failing) but getting into Cinderella Rockerfellas

Cherry red Doc Martens and drainpipe Levi’s

But to cap it all, standing on the paddock at OT to see Frankie’s double, thinking we are in the big time, not knowing the heartbreak a year later

Looking back, life was a bit shit, but fuck me it was brilliant that year

And then there was Maggie 💣.........

How dare you! 😄

The 1980's were on last night for 90 minutes, great memories and  bit of foot tapping🦶

Brilliant times the mid to late 70s for me, massive crowds, massive away followings, and the 1975 Burnden park invasion by Man U exorcised twice by the great Frank Worthington.

i know it wasnt 1979 but my Auntie had been a club singer on the northern circuit through the 70s

she moved on to be a music agent , i remember an earl 80s christmas party at her house with the Dooleys there.

The ladies had spray on shiny trousers , Bob Williamson was crawling around the floor pissed a fart in a very ripped shirt/blouse

with a boxer dog stood on his back

Was that also the year that schools couldn't get heating oil due to some strike and we got a couple extra weeks off after Christmas?

It was around the time of hit me with your rhythm stick.

Bloody hell, a blast from the past, remember his song about us not going up, "one nil down and all to do if we're not to stay in division two"

As 1979 turned into the 80s football fashion was starting to take off, most geezers still looked like the bass player in Dr Feelgood but i can remember going away to Arsenal that season and seeing young uns in Pringle jumpers and deer stalker hats, we were still a couple of years behind that but got there eventually.

Thatcher.

They don’t make them like her anymore.

The female version of Churchill.

She was good for the time, as was Churchill in his.

I liked the late 70s, lots of good old piss artistry and although the country had gone to shit we still enjoyed ourselves

Williamson lived in Tonge Fold somewhere. Got chatting with him in the KFC on Bury Rd one night. Didn't know it was him at the time.

2016. Rare blood disorder, apparently 🤔

Got told he liked a drink. Before we got the craving for fried chicken we had been in the Bowling Green just a few doors down. He might have been in the pub as well. Back then it was last orders then out.

Bowler was my local in those days and Ken Yates' on Ainsworth Lane at last orders. Bob was alright

Wasn't he in the Tetley Mild advert at the time?

Good chippy was Kens proper lard in't fryer and good quality Roy Hudds.

Talking of chippy's, good ones are hardly ever open and shit ones seem to be open 24/7.

8 pints of Willies and a game of Killer in Bowler, Pudding and Chips on way home, who could ask for more?

Ken used to sell Fullomeat Puddings and Pies from Hypatia Street until they got closed down after a rat drowned in the gravy.
