Food / Delivery shortages

Covid?

Brexit?

Both?

I notice it’s taken McDonald’s to run out of milkshakes for it to actually cause people to lose their shit.

I read that 14,000 EU lorry drivers left jobs in the UK since brexit, and only 600 have returned.

Covid caused loss of tests to be cancelled.

I was down at port Salford few weeks ago and that’s a very good freight set up

the long term plan looks mint it’s part of the Atlantic gateway project

The proposed housing development in Little Lever involves repairing the breach in the Bolton-Bury canal which would open up that stretch through Radcliffe. That would be great but would have no effect on the current driver shortage.

My fellow Europeans googling ‘German Chancellor Election’ right now.😊

Every fool knows it's that Helmet Coal bloke.

Sadly, nobody wants to be a lorry driver, the pay is absolutely shit and the conditions, especially if you have to stay in your cab for a few nights, are shit as well. We won't be making up the shortage of drivers from young UK folk unless things improve dramatically and quickly.

Will certainly take a while

There's a backlog of tests waiting because they were stopped for a while, so they should start coming through now.

Wages already on the up for them.

Not a drop round here, all petrol stations shut and no milk in sainsbury's today. Booooo.

In other words, if you're working class - know your place.

Not sure if you are joking there.

Hope so because its utter, utter crap.

People from poorer backgrounds had a far better opportunity than now. You got in on academic merit, and got grants if needed. No debts.

My lad has already been approached to consider oxbridge, but doesn't want to go to university because he's shit scared of the debt.

Can't blame him, though we're encouraging him not to worry too much, but to look for graduate apprenticeships or sponsorships if that will lead to his ultimate career choice.

Unfortunately, that does mean he has to start firming up on job ideas sooner than we had to.

Additionally, a degree is meaningless if it doesn't get you where you want to be.

Having one for the sake of it, like a badge of honour, but yielding nothing is a waste of time.

Well that's not true. I know loads who did history for example who now work in Banking - or music and now work in marketing...

For all the jobs I've ever applied for you've had to be a minimum of a bachelor's and then continual professional qualifications. I get the debt thing and on graduate work programmes seem like a great idea, and in some careers, media buying for example you could work up.

Although it's sad that going to university to learn is a thing of the past for many unless you have decent money already. Many at my current place don't even think of it as debt as it doesn't stop things like.hoise purchase etc and it's more than likely to get written off.

My other half finishes paying her student loan this month. She's 40 and went before fees.

If you take out a student loan(s) and it ends up getting written off is that not sort of saying it was a waste of time as your earning naff all? Or have they changed rules for repayment of it?

That retort just reinforces what I wrote originally, imo.

Anyhow, Mortimer and Whitehouse is on so...

No further correspondence will be entered into.

What if you did medicine then earned naff all because you spent your working life saving lives in developing countries for naff all pay?

It's worth three years+ at University just to have the words and confidence to verbally smash a twat who thinks he/she is your better to bits.

Mammon is not the be-all end-all tha' knows..?

The bloke that manufactured the first original Billy Big-Mouth Bass toys/ornaments is probably a millionaire.

Does that make his life more worthwhile than a drama graduate who works in Costa?

Its paid back based on income post degree and only if youre earning a decent amount

Tuition fees dont stop anybody going to Uni

daughters should be paid off in her 40s and she doesnt bat an eyelid over it

One loophole id be looking at, its paid through income tax, so if you fuck off abroad, you pay nowt

I get the charity point absolutely.

as for the other not sure folk should need an undergraduate degree to do that. And what if the person actually is better than you then is the 3+ years then a waste?

I went to uni to allow me to pursue a specific career and solely did this to boost my earning potential. Otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered with it personally.

So it’s still the same method of repayment then it appears, thanks.

I paid mine off by time I was 31 I think (graduated at 25) albeit it was a modest (ish) amount as I still worked essentially full time hours whilst at uni and 70 hours a week in holidays or I couldn’t have afforded to go.

Are you talking about repaying if abroad?

I know she didnt make payments from the desert

A. No twat is my better, and vice-versa, but if one thinks they are, University and doing well at it, from a very non-academic background has given me the confidence to take them down a peg or two.

B. I stopped giving a shit about 'earning potential' around the time of the banking crash...

I follow the Scandi concept of 'Lägom' - 'Enough'.

That doesn't mean I walk around like Swampy, nor does it mean I swan about in ridiculous (both in price and aesthetics) fashionwear like a walking billboard.

C. I wrote off much of my twenties playing house with someone who crushed my spirit. Returning to University a 2nd time gave me ample opportunities to make up for lost years 'socially' - and to do a career based mode of study (albeit the wrong one)...

I know a nurse who worked in Saudi Arabia...

She earned a packet.

She may as well have done a bank job and six years 'bird' instead.

I wouldn’t have perceived you as someone who needed university to deal with somebody who felt they were better than you.  But if it gave you the Confidence that you needed then fair play.

Not entirely true though is it- your lass may have been fine, but others are worried by it.

As a 17/18 year old the idea of tens of thousands owed before you start work is daunting. No need for it.

Lad is concerned about the debt, whether or not he needs to be.

Loads also never paid back, so the whole concept is flawed anyway.

If your among the best in a limited field then what good is that?

Being among the best in a strong field, much better.

Being told you're bright by one's mam, whilst nice, isn't like having similar sentiments expressed by Academics.

Confidence is the difference between thinking you can do something and knowing you can do something.

Leaving a jumped up twat stumbling and shambling about with words is far better than saying "Are you calling my car a queer?" then knocking their proverbial off with what I used to cuntishly term a 'one arrow'.

I'm talking about before then. No fees at all to pay, no loans. You got a grant, with the amount dependent upon parental income.

I believe that’s called ability. Not confidence
