Food / Delivery shortages

Covid?

Brexit?

Both?

I notice it’s taken McDonald’s to run out of milkshakes for it to actually cause people to lose their shit.

I read that 14,000 EU lorry drivers left jobs in the UK since brexit, and only 600 have returned.

Covid caused loss of tests to be cancelled.

I got my Masters in Business and Management in 2011, not worth the paper it's written on, it certainly never helped me

Should've done sommat you'd have at least enjoyed doing then.

Not in Mathematics not in Contemporary Dance.

I'll take that bet.

If 50% of teens go to university, then that would mean quite a few in your poll would have been.

Which would kind of prove the point that they're not the be all and end all

My lad got a degree in marketing and now he negotiates industrial contracts. Fuck all to do with marketing, I doubt.

I think jobs are given because you've shown yourself as capable.

Loads of diesel at Norton Canes services on the M6 toll.

Strictly no peasants at £1.80 per quarter gallon.

It was the area of work I was in and too old to change paths

Bout right for 1.2 ltr.😘

Course they are.

If you haven't got one you can't apply for any job that specifies a degree is required for starters.

Ok so if you need a degree in quantum Physics specifically for a job having a degree in sociology isn’t gonna cut it making this point moot.

Plenty of life outside university and there should be more encouragement in doing apprenticeships etc.

That's not what I said.

Loads of jobs specify a minimum of a degree. Saw an advert today, minimum of a 2.1 in any subject.

I can apply for that. I can also apply to be a labourer on a building site if I wanted

Some of the biggest fucking idiots I know have degrees.

Fucking hell! I just went to Rivington services and gasped at their £1.60.9 for diesel.

Of course, to a point they do.

Not everyone with a degree will have been able to do what he does now though.

Just more chaff for employers to sift through now.

Aye and as discussed plenty of degrees that won’t get you in anywhere making the point against all degrees being beneficial.

Not knocking uni. Anyone who wants to go should be able to better themselves. But talk of getting a degree makes plenty go and waste 3 years of their lives and money.

Every person who has a degree could have applied for that job I saw today. Not one person without one could have.

So how's that not beneficial over not having one?

Compare with football.

Fitness levels probably much higher on average than they used to be for various reasons. Therefore in order to play, you'll need to be fitter than your predecessors.

Doesn't make you a better player necessarily. Just run more.

Going round in circles here so I’ll leave it. Covered this in previous posts.

I’m glad it didn’t take me 3 years of living away to see there was life beyond my street though. (A joke)

Fair enough.

I'll just leave you with this from the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

it's a no brainer for my nipper as far as I'm concerned.

Graduates will earn on average 20% more over their working lives than those who did not attend university.

For women, earnings increase by £100,000 on average with a degree while men go on to earn £130,000 more than non-graduates over their working lives, after student loan payments and taxes have been considered.

But for those studying medicine or economics, lifetime earnings reach £500,000 more for men and £250,000 for women compared to non-graduates.

The research carried out by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) reveals the benefits a degree can provide to students, the economy and society.

It suggested the economy gains £240,000 per male graduate and £130,000 per female graduate on average over a lifetime.

If 50% of kids have one, more employers will require one.

Taken as a whole, some degrees are far more valuable than others, and some are far easier than others.

Some jobs will only require a moderate level of academic ability, which at one time may have been filled by those with a levels. Those with degrees went higher.

Now loads of those moderate ability students have a degree, so inevitably employers insist on it. Doesn't mean all graduates are the same.

It may well be the case that proportionally the number of jobs that used to require a degree has increased, but the idea that 50% is needed is ridiculous.

The real world illustrates the balance.

Trades in short supply and earning a lot. My neighbour used to have his own very successful construction business.

Just informed me that rates can be £700 per thousand bricks laid currently. Very top blokes taking home a grand a day. Good luck to them. A graduate, on average, is getting £29k per year.
