August 28, 20214 yr Hello, Picked a camel leather holdall in mallorca on holidays from an out of the way shop. With it being out of the way it may have been sat there for years. I was wondering is there anything specific needed to preserve/keep it in good nick like leather soap or something? thanks

August 28, 20214 yr Will be aniline no doubt, or maybe a nappa. In terms of how you care for it, do a good leather balm will do well. I'd avoid saddle soap if you want to send me a picture i can try to give a bit more advice. Nap leather, aniline, pigmented and bonded all have different cleaning and care methods. August 28, 20214 yr Was it a Dromedary or a Bactrian? One you can just throw in the washing machine on o cool wash. The other requires a few pounds worth of cream to keep it supple.

August 28, 20214 yr I had an afghan coat in my brief hippy days, all the dogs on the estate used to follow me like the Pied Piper. Didn't survive when I put it through the wash and it came out 10 sizes smaller

August 29, 20214 yr Scrunch up loads of newspaper and fill the bag with it... Soak the newspaper with turpentine then set it alight. It 'cures' the leather.
August 29, 20214 yr According to one of the old ship stowage manuals we have at work they used to transport dog shit for the leather tanning process as it supposedly softened the leather. One of the “hazards” was said to be that if wet it gave off an offensive smell. Maybe that’s why it mings.

Place i worked for years dated back a couple of centuries at least Some of its life it had been a tannery We needed to get some pits dug to fit some new machinery Fuck me, exposing those old skins after god knows how long was enough to clear the passages Job stopped and all sorts of jabs required for those on the works
