You can learn bass in a day but to learn to play it well takes time and talent, of which I have neither.

Starters:

Papa was a Rolling Stone by Sly and the Family Stone

Only the Trees by Hootie and the Blowfish

If we're going on songs them Joe Lally on Waiting Room deserves a mention.

And the winning answer is….

Every time I play this in the car - I end up pumping up the volume, and then hitting the back button so I can listen to it again from the start at full whack!!!

The opening bass line to Love Song by The Damned is heavy and memorable - and playable. 4 notes if I remember rightly.

And some of the 1980s bass playing by Paul Gray of The Damned (also UFO) is fantastic - he’s done some solo YouTube videos where he plays many of these lines on his Rickenbacker (possibly the finest bass out there - its a thing of pure beauty).

And lastly, or maybe not, check out the Senseless Things bassist - Morgan Nicholls. Incredibly talented. Later became the 4th member (touring) of Muse.

Lots of great reggae bass lines

one more chance by Jackson 5 is

Marvin Gaye - heard it through the grapevine.

Not sure it's classed as a bass line but the underlying bass riff through that is class.

When I first heard that opening bass line live it was Euphoric.

Close. She bangs the drum just shades it.

Full album still on the playlist now.

Not for the bass but made of stone at the etihad. WOW!!!

Even though I don’t like them, I know the bloke out of Level 42 always gets doffed caps from other bassists, so he must be decent.

Steve Harris, obviously.

Ben Shephard

Geddy Lee

And, of course

Lemmy.

At last --  Lemmy !!!!!

Must be something in the water, I had a mad dream about going to the inauguration of some new president with the Queen and having a fight at the bar with Highlander.

Lost my phone on a mad bus trip round London that took me to Wandsworth prison which was a new restaurant and had a massive argument with an ex girlfriend because most of the place was underwater.

Hey - Pixies

Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire

Don't think has anyone mentioned anything by John Deacon yet, from a song point of view Under Pressure and Another One Bites The Dust should be there and from the perspective of locking a band together him and Taylor were probably as good as it gets.

And I don't even like Queen.

We agree then. James Jamerson.

This was another classic of his. The Funk Brothers were outstanding.

Not played on a bass I'm afraid. Played on a guitar.
