She ran her lifetime best in Eugene, Oregon, last September (1:55.19). She also ran 1:55.78 there last month in her only 800 this season before the European.

This year is her best opportunity to win in the Olympics because Phoebe Gill is a sensational runner. She was about the same level as KH at ages 12 and 13 but by 15 she was matching KH's times at 17. At 16 Gill was matching KH at 18. Keely's breakthrough came at 19. Gill's 17th birthday was in late April and she has run 1:57.86 in Belfast and 1:58.08 in Manchester holding on to win on each occasion after sensationally fast opening laps.

She's pulled out of three races in the last few weeks, so she will go into the US Olympic Trials undercooked. It still seems likely she will be OK but the American Trials are a real jeopardy - first 3 are selected so long as they have the entry standard (and they will have).

GB  cannot risk such a brutal system, so there is always one space for selectors' discretion

To be fair, selecting 3 runners from a US population of 333,300,000 is a lot worse odds of getting into the Olympic team than UK (pop - 68,000,000)

We were in Rome last week for the Championships.  No idea if there were lots of weakened squads there with the Olympics so close but where have all those great Italian's come from?! At previous Europeans they've barely made a dent.

Flying home Thursday I was sat next to a nice lass who turned out to be Keeley Hodgkinson's mum. She said it had been touch and go whether she ran that final, she'd been so rough. Paris has already set them back 4k so far.  Those costs were the reason we did the Europeans this year. A week's athletics and accommodation in Rome for a week, worked out the same as 1 overnight in Paris.

It’s a shame there’s no help from the various levels of Amateur Athletic Associations; from club, town, county and national. If each paid their way then actually being good at a discipline would be affordable. The payback would be the feel good factor for the club in a “Look what our club can produce.” manner.

The clubs can't afford to do that

It should really come from the sponsors, that kind of money is chump change for them

The clubs charge a fee. A very small percentage get to national level. The clubs CAN afford to pay a bit towards the cost of their successful athletes travelling to compete.

For the 1920 Olympics the maximum number from one country per event was reduced from 11 (which applied in 1908 and1912) to just 3.

With limited competition across the whole of the USA at that time, selectors based in, say, Boston, Chicago, Los 

Angeles and Austin would never agree and so the sudden trials came into being. World record holders and defending champions have been known to fail and thus not make the team.

Just watching this year. Know lots doing it and plenty of first timers with it being a half distance 70.3

 

Reckon this will be well worth watching.
