Athletics World Champs

Should have started a thread earlier- if anyone’s interested!

But couldn’t resist after that run from Josh Kerr.

Absolutely phenomenal 👏👏

  • I've NEVER seen that photo before! It is clearly an Oxford inter-College (Cuppers) match and I think it must be 1969, so it's on the track at Iffley Road where Bannister first ran a sub-4 minute

Fantastic to be able to run 1:54 for 800m Malc. Hope you don't mind, know your surname from The Knowledge contributions. An internet doff of the cap.

  • 400/800 doubles used to regular options.  In the 1948 London Olympics Arthur Wint (Jam/RAF) won the 400 and was second in the 800 to Mal Whitfield (USA), the latter having been third in the 400.

Of course he has matured now, I think. Should be very interesting.

Think it's fair to say he wasn't as funny as he thought when he was younger.

Not into these "team whoever" slogans, whether sport or beyond.

Seems an American import.

? not a clue what you are on about

Just been watching some athletics championship on telly.

Some lady called Eliza McCartney just had me lost for words, then she failed her jump and carried on smiling. Daughters asked me how people even get started in some of these sports and I genuinely don't know

Keeley just done a PB in 800m in Landan...

The fastest 4 times this year are by Britons (2 for KH, 1 for Reekie and 1 for (Geo,) Bell (who is running 1500 in the Olympics.

9 of the fast 21 are by 5 different Britons - 3KH, 3 Reekie and 1 each for (G) Bell, Muir and Gill.

I think we can probably scrub the first two and Semenya's records

Olizarenko was born in Russia but married a Ukrainian and settled in Odessa (also home to Vladimir Kuts). She died aged 63 of Motor Neurone Disease.

[KH not quite as fast as me yet  (at my prime -not as I am now)]

My lad was in an athletics comp other week against other schools. Came 4th in 200 meters.

A lad in his class did 100m in 12 seconds. That's pretty fucking quick for a 13 year old.

I've looked in my training diaries and my mileage in the week leading up to a sub 1:55 was never more than 25 miles, and on one occasion barely 10. But they all contained some quality speed sessions.

In fact my mileage in those days (my college years) never exceeded 60 in a week.

That track doesn't look like the ones we have today either 🙂

Take a second or so off for that alone

Looking at the photo it is clearly 1969 because 2 of the 6 runners were doing one-year Postgrad teaching diplomas.

My training diary tells me it was Monday 19th May.

My training diary reads:

Cuppers final

1 mile jog etc

880 1st 2:01.2. 64 to bell, 2nd at Hugh Richards' shoulder from start to 600. Then broke, taking quick lead and holding it, easing considerably in straight.

1 mile 68.2, 2:15, dropped 3:32, 4:57.6 (3rd) easing.

440 53ish 5th. Tired.

The photo appears to be taken from the top of the judges stand, hence looking down to the runners. Was it by Bill Potter (later fashion photographer for Daily Expess) or Oxford Mail.

Just googled Malcolm <surname> runner, have a look for yourself mate 👍

What's all this about?

It was a heat and he pulled up far too early thinking he'd done what was needed to qualify

He might even have confused one of the earlier lines for the finish line
