Josh Vela

What are people's thoughts on this guy?

He played 160 games for us which is a good effort. He's played 150 odd for everyone else.

The promotion season under parky I thought he was great, a proper number 8. Most the other times I thought he was a half decent harrier and not much else, every time I've seen him play against us since he's done nothing except bully a few young ones

I just wonder In different times under different tutors , could he have been better?

Im with you on this , at the time we had a really good crop of kids coming thru that looked like it might save us .  Holding was rapidly shipped out as was anyone that looked like they had a fee , Vela included . And what the club did to Zac Clough was nothing short of a bullying disgrace.

Holding was sold six months before he'd have left on a free transfer and Vela left of his own accord after his contract expired

In what sense were they shipped out as soon they looked like they had a fee?

Anyway, we don't miss Vela

What about Nat Phillips?

Hardly gone on to do much, 80 games by 26, and dropped down to the scottish league, reckon if it was Jimmy Phillips lad, would have fallen off the radar long ago.

Was saying very much the same yesterday before the game.

Played a lot of games for us. Interestingly did a job at rb for a bit though I wonder if that did any damage long term. Was great in the promotion season. Then like anyone else was on a hiding to nothing once we went up that final year or 2.

Has gone on to have a decent career at a level very much similar to us over the time period. I wonder if he wishes he’d stayed or perhaps isn’t bothered. I suspect he does.

Josh Vela is a far better player when concentrating on being a footballer than a hatchet man.

Did well for us, but was on the decline once he started going on the piss with Wheater. Lots of ifs and buts, of course, but had he stayed through the turmoil, he'd have done a job for us under Hill and Evatt.

If we'd been in a position to keep these, grow them & even add a couple then Phillips & Holden, with Vela & Clough would have been an interesting bunch.

But we weren't.

Vela, I always empathised with him following the bizarre treatment he got from Dougie Freedman. Obviously never Premiership standard, but certainly a mid league professional.

Sadly converted to thug status & especially it seemed when playing us.

But he's achieved what every singly one of us here would have dreamt of.

Vela didn't help himself by going on the piss all the time with Wheater

We got money for them, which we needed?

An unfortunate situation of course, but we all know the clough transfer was vital for the club, even if terribly sad for the kid at the time.

Nice to see Zach having a good season in Australia.

He had got too much into the boozing and being a billy big bollocks imo. Probably doesn’t care as will have earnt the same with a few signing on fees. Just a job to these lads

Think it’s too simplistic to say that. If the club wasn’t such a farce it may have all been so different. That said you may well be right.

Agree about the farce bit. Must be hard to concentrate when it’s all fucking about.

i would have liked to know what properly happened with Phillips, I’ve always felt Jimmy shafted us doing what I understand any dad would do.

We didn't get any money for Vela because he opted to leave on a free transfer at the end of his contract

Holding was always leaving at the end of that season and was sold to a Premier League club

Neither meet the definition of being shipped out as soon as they looked like they'd attract a fee IMO

Id hope having had out of the club what dad did, id have acted differently

Parky ran Josh's legs off, he became a one man press, an important player without actually touching the ball very much. Point taken about him drinking with Wheater, previously some of his link play with young Zach was a delight. Last night he looked a shadow of that player, overweight and unimaginative.

Jimmy is/was a good servant of Bolton and he did the right thing by his family. Was shafted like everyone else by the end.

It pretty much stopped us going bankrupt.

Ken was a cunt but getting £9.5m for him and Madine was the greatest trick the devil ever pulled.

Unbelievable buisness and had both clubs pants down.

Servant suggests he wasnt paid 6 figures for years

Why do you feel he was shafted?

He was way too expensive to keep, i know that much

Anyway, thankfully its water under the bridge

That youth team that got to the FA Youth Cup semi-final had some good players at that level. I don't think Parky was ever into blooding youth.

Technically you are right of course. Just feel Jimmy was loyal to the club and town as a player/coach/manager.

His 6 figure salary was fine in the premier league (if that’s what he was on, I have no idea)

He didn’t relegate us 3 divisions so him becoming too expensive you could argue was out of his hands.

Not his fault the club offered him the deal he had.

He was shafted as I reckon he was talked up for the big job a few times (not saying I agree, but clearly something had been said) Then shafted like every employee was at BWFC when Ken came in.

Did Jimmy Phillips shove his two fingers up towards the club or towards Ken?

I think the latter.

Jimmy Phillips left post Ken, so you may wish to think again

Was it the 8 4 at spurs year?

If so, theres not many broke any pots, considering we were on the back of a pretty successful prem era

Other than holding, suppose cloughs next best, then?

Maher, possibly

Wanderers: Sievers, Hendrie, Gibson, Holding, Maher, Bailey, Lester, Wolstenholme, Clough, Youngs, Walker (Newby 88): (Unused substitutes: Campbell, Hamer, Nolan, Kennedy)
