2 right back

3 left back

5&6 centre Halves ( did not have a 'side' allocated to the number.)

4 Midfield and probably captain

9 and 10 up front (9 big lad scorer 10 sometimes big some times smaller grafter score a few)

7 and 11 wide players (right and left respectively) not always out and out wingers.

8 midfield alongside 4 .

Spot on.

1/ Brannigan

2/ Brown

3/Phillips

4/ Kelly

5/ Seagraves

6/ Stubbs

7/ Lee

8/ Mcateer

9/ Walker

10/ McGinlay

11/ Thompson

No idea, I’ve not fact checked that this was ever the case, but it is in my mind 😊

pretty much that was ours, but weird anomalies- Beardsley and Robson wore 7 in their pomp, Bruce an Pallister were 4 and 6, Sharpe and Barnes played left mid in 5 and 10 a couple of years earlier- i thought it was us who were different with CBs and CMs

looking at it, England 1990 squad used our model? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_FIFA_World_Cup_squads#Group_F

theres a fan vlog on youtube and you can pretty clearly make some of em out

they don't look like the smellies who went to FGR

FGR was purely for the super fan elite. Triple Super Fan points, a rumble with Bury and swift shuffle off vege Vince. One for the ages.......

If this is based on 1993 Phillips and Thompson weren't there yet either.

You'd have Burke and Patterson

Think you are right on both points. 👍

I always associate logical numbering with the 2-3-5 formation that was prevalent for decades into 60s, and the 4-4-2 that evolved into the 70s was the point at which logic disappeared.

1: goalkeeper

2. right back

3. left back

4. right half

5. centre half

6. left half

7. right outside forward

8. right inside forward

9. centre forward

10. left inside forward

11. left outside forward

Evolving to …

1. Goalkeeper

2. right back

3. left back

4. right centre back

5. left centre back

6. right centre midfield

7. right wing

8. left centre midfield

9. right centre forward

10. left centre forward

11. left wing

As seen, logic disappears at this time. Logic would number the four in midfield as 6-9, and the two forwards as 10-11.

Surprised Evatt hasn't tried this 235 formation...

4 was definitely a midfielder and 6 a defender in my lifetime. Did it start the other way round?

I suppose if we're basing the change coming from the old 2-3-5 formation, the 3 were numbered 4, 5, 6. Logic dictates the higher number is further up the pitch, but I've always preferred the midfielder being the number 4, don't know if Nolan maybe just skewed my view on it though.

Modern day though, as someone mentioned above, when pundits and the like are discussing midfielder roles they almost always refer to them as either 6, 8s or 10s.

I'm still scarred from the game at West Ham a few years back where they outclassed us, not only more skilful but also physically bigger, stronger & faster than us. The gulf was massive & i'm not sure that's changed, even an Arsenal 2nd team might paste us.

Tricky selection, don't want a humiliation but equally don't want injuries before the more important Crawley game.

I'd settle for no injuries, a nice boost to the finances & a closish game......any more would be a bonus.

at what point is it acceptable for the banner to make an appearance?

I was going to suggest the 4 and 6 swap too, but I think that's too old school now with people talking about whether a midfielder is a "6, 8 or 10"

Aye.

Been a shift in recent years in labelling players by a number.

Just seemed to creep in.

Reminds me off egg chasing.

That's how I see it

Might be wrong but seem to remember Reidy being number 10 back in the day and Ray Train at 9

Whatmore was number 8 (I think) and Frank 11

Got promoted with that weird numbering but it's played havoc with my OCD

Still 0 apiece but there’s 25 hours left 😀

At least we're holding our own. It would be just our luck to concede with only 90 minutes left....... 😁
