unsung players that folk might have forgotten about or never heard of

Mike Whitlow. Solid, dirty and a true professional. Often doing things in the community on behalf of the club.

Tony Cunningham (1991) played for Bury before coming to us (on loan I think). Only played 9 times but scored 4 goals. Just what we needed at that time. Harder than Abdoulaye Faye and John Fashanu combined.

Tony Kelly. My favourite player of the Rioch years. Pulled all the strings that made the rest of the team sing.

Paul Warhurst.  Never scored for us but a solid player and took no shit on the pitch.

Ray Train (1977/78) Another one who never scored for us. He was a midfielder who played his part in a team that some will remember with great fondness.

Warhurst and Bruno N’Gotty I’m always getting them mixed up.

  • Tony Henry . One of my first favourite Wanderers.

Simon Cannavaro Charlton.

For a wee man he was excellent when having to fill in at centre back.

Some proper ropey results roundabout this time of year in the build up to that play-off final.

Some good material there for this season when the focus becomes preparing our best 11 for the play off final in May.

Great point. Very similar scenario where we knew autos wasn't realistic by mid Feb after that loss to Blackburn but we were comfortable in the play offs, but we managed to build momentum at the right time and have a good line up ready for the play offs.

Hopefully similar this season, bit of tinkering now to find the best line up and then settle on it

Just checked on Warhurst who had 91 appearances with us the most at any of his clubs. 88 for sheff wed and 57 for Blackburn. Surprised me that.

120 appearances for Simon Charlton just 4 short of his most appearances at his first club Huddersfield.

Both fantastic players for us.

Mixu only 69 games and 15 goals.

Goal machine.

We were bad at home and great away from memory which I’m proving isn’t great this morning.

We had some bad results at home, thinking 3-1 up against both palace and Gillingham and drew 3-3

When he got west ham promoted the records were almost identical in terms of home and away form

That was Bruno.

Warhurst had left by then.

I’ve had a rethink, and a look up. Bolton v Leicester 2001

Robbie Savage made a horrible tackle on Colin Hendry which went unpunished then Holdsworth and Warhurst got sent off gunning for Savage. He got himself subbed off and all by the 24th minute.

Good old Mike Riley eh ?

BSA was strapped up to a heart rate monitor for a TV programme if I remember correctly.

nah, did nothing really of any note - triple deadline day signing with Ballesta, who also did nothing, and Laville who most certainly did play a role in keeping us up

It was Andre that Pearce chopped down for his red card in Okocha West Ham match

Not forgotten but I was surprised after the Sky Sports doc to learn that Henrik Pedersen (just) outlasted Big Sam here.

Had a weird career going from ineffectual striker to passable left back. And despite playing nigh on 150+ Premier League games he never got a look in for Denmark.

Another name - The Juke played on the most forgettable Bolton team of my lifetime, but is probably the best striker we've had in the last 15 years.

Him and Joe Mason looked half decent together

Tonight with Trevor McDonald. Dave Bassett in the other dugout. Not a clue why no footage exists, wish I’d kept my VCR recording of it.

There is a20 minute highlight video on a premier league betting site but they asked that many questions I fucked it off.

That Blackburn Friday night game was up there for most disappointing. Old timer going on the pitch to have a go at Simon Charlton while we still playing.

Pretty lively after. I’m sure we were locked in for a bit in the ESL after

Don't know about unsung but some perhaps not fully appreciated at the time;

N'gotty

Matty Taylor

Dervite

Scott Green

Eagles

There is an official club DVD of that match easily found on Amazon or Ebay . In the top 5 of my favourite games of all time .

That game is the most memorable for me.. a lot of games have seemed to have merged into one. Wouldn't have been surprised if someone ran on the pitch and murdered Savage at some point!

For some reason i just recall Bassett bollocking Dennis Wise for making a load of shit cross field passes in that ITV thingy:D

Taylor and eagles got so much shit when the rest of the team went hiding and they were trying.

Steve Thompson seemed to get a lot of unwarranted stick when he was head and shoulders our best player .........and Jules as they call him at Bolton......never our most gifted but gave everything he had and was another home grown whipping boy.

This mon when he first signed, class act the suffered a bad injury.

Wasn’t for long but a player who stands out for me, was Vincent Candela.

handful of appearances that were absolutely top, top class. Shame we couldn’t keep him, but no surprises really.

Not exactly unsung as a player, but not really remembered so well at Bolton
