QPR away first game. Both my brother in laws are QPR fans so been looking forward to this one, but I’m on holiday for the first game so it’s nailed on first game.

The closest team weve played on Boxing day (or 27th if no game on BD) is Barnsley, followed by Rotherham. We've had trips to Carlisle, Sunderland and Middlesborough, and hosted Cheltenham.

The days of Boxing day games automatically being local derbies is long gone.

as said we've played Blackburn and Burnley on boxing day relatively recently

I don't expect derbies but I don't expect away fans to have to make longer than average journeys

looking back at boxing day fixtures, this century, furthest we've had to go is Sunderland, West brom, Carlisle, Lincoln, Boro

coming to us Newcastle and Shrewsbury

we've had loads of north west derbies with Liverpool, Everton, utd, Blackburn, Burnley

and plenty with Yorkshire

point is, the EFL want to keep boxing day as local as possible and don't mind "local" derbies

they probably wouldn't go with Newcastle Sunderland, city utd, Liverpool Everton etc

but our games v Blackburn, Burnley and Preston don't come close in terms of potential issues

and there weren't any when we played them previously

To those of us (most?) of a certain age, 12 years ago seems like 5 minutes ago. The reality is, much has changed over these 12 years.

First of all, football’s TV deals are much more expansive now. Almost half of all Premier League matches are shown live, along with a growing number of EFL games; especially via Sky Sports +. Sky - because they are the dominant players - want the big games (including local derbies) for viewing at times they need to generate advertising revenue. They want them spread across the year, rather than a glut of them simultaneously on bank holidays.

In addition, big local derbies attract big crowds and associated policing costs. With the strain on public finances, it is cheaper to schedule all this police overtime away from bank holidays.

I’ll be very surprised if any of the Lancashire (or other) derbies in this year’s Championship are scheduled for Boxing Day.

Lincoln (H) Good Friday or Easter Monday

southampton, west ham, qpr, watford, charlton will all be midweek away

Trying to think what the most disappointing 1st fixture would be.

Lincoln has already been mentioned someone like Stoke or West Brom would also be pretty meh.

boxing day fixtures tend to attract big crowds anyway

we had Sheff Weds recently bring 5k on a boxing day fixture, as did Derby

there are plenty teams that could bring a full away end in the championship given, as pointed out, they like to keep fans travelling down to a minimum
