20 goals a season !!

Featured Replies

According to the free Manchester Metro paper Allardyce is looking for a 20 goals a seaon striker to take us to the next level.

It is the first time since Ricketts we have had a player in double figures and it is a midfielder !!

Any realistic suggestions ?

Ole Solskjaer or the shock element of David Nugent like When Andy Johnson burst on to the scene and obviously Ricketts. Prem defences struggle to cope with new players on the scene not just that, Nugent is very good. The stumblinig block is he is young and English which brings a hefty fee!!!

If your scanning world football and looking for a striker in our price bracket who has a great goal scoring record in both his current/previous domestic football and on the international stage... then we already have him :-k

Jared Borgetti

I think Sam is in dreamland again. Our style of play 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 with just one central striker as a target man does not allow a goal poacher to be accommodated.

A central striker who can play as a taget man get 20 goals a season is not in our price bracket.

I'd be happier having two 10 goals a year strikers otherwise you spend a lot of money and risk getting an injury (Owen being an example at Newcastle)

And Borgetti..... can't we take a small risk against Sunderland and start with Jared and Diouf together for an hour or so and see if Nolan and Stelios can feed them enough times for them to get a goal or 4?

our front line first choice is

davies diouf stelios when all fit

where does this new '20 goals a season' fella fit in

if we spend a fortune on him then he would have to replace

either diouf or stelios as we are ineffective without davies

though diouf and stelios score plenty of goals usually

i would love us to play borgetti davies and diouf in a three pronged forward line, but can we take the risk with 3 points a must if we are going to qualify for europe again. :-k

thats the problem skipper

taking a risk on here is one thing

but why take a risk when what we have works

ffs, we scored 4 last saturday

we win our games in hand and go 4th

and folk want to tinker

can't get my head around it to be honest

To get a 20 goal a season striker Gartside's going to have put his hand in his pocket and splash the cash! We would be talking 6 millions plus for a decent striker! Have we got that money! ? I think not!

Chelsea get by without one don't they?

This '20 goal a season striker' is the biggest red-herring around, what matters is how many you get as a team.

Sharing the goals around is the ideal position to be in, you don't rely on one player then, and the opposition can't simply legislate for one player.

I would rather wait until we are 2 or 3 up before we start tinkering with anything, otherwise we could find ourselves 60 minutes in and still at 0:0 (or even worse losing) and then things become really difficult. We must make sure we get all 3 points tomorrow, so no tinkering!

To be fair the charge of folk wanting to 'tinker' is a bit off beam here when BSA is the one who came up with the '20 goals a season' cliche this time.

Get Brixton signed up!

How many strikers in the Prem will get 20 league goals this season, 2 maybe 3?

Midfielders that get 15 - thats the future.

The we played last sautrday is the way forward.

have posted this before but with stelios and diouff supporting daivies and also dropping back to help in midfield we can play a midfield 3 of speed, jay jay and nolan. but three across rather than 2 with a holding player.

spped and jay jay are approaching the end of their carears so we need to start making sure we have replacements for them.

having said that i would our centre forward to be someone with real pace so the 'out' ball rather than being to daives for him to hold up could go into the corners or over the top.

like already said, i do not see how a 20 goal a season man fits into our system.

i just cant see davies begin dropped, as far as im concerned hes the man to lead our attack for next 3 or 4 years, even if he does only average 5 goals a season...

as long as the wider men are gettin 10 each i dont see the need for a 20 goal man...

re davies out wide

when okocha hit the 60 yard diagonal ball t'other night

davies drills it back in the middle

and nolan takes it first time

now that would have been a goal to remember

not really

if we had he man who fits the bill, playing him wouldn't be tinkering

the jury is out on whether borgetti is that man, so we'd be experimenting when we really don't need to

Didn't do Palace any good, rather they where shared out although another McGinley would be pretty special

last season we scored 49 goals in 38 league games

this season so far we have scored 37 goals with 11 games left

so looks like were gonna get up to 50-55 goals i would imagine

as long as we score 55 a season and keep our defence as tight as it has been then we should be in the top 6 season in season out

say nolan, stelios and diouf get 35 between them

davies wont always such a lean season he would usually get 8 id say at least, with the rest of the squad making up the other goals

so its not lookin bad at all really

Personally I think Davies chronic lack of pace means he can't play wide.

He's the target man or nothing for me

20 goal a season strikers are few and far between - how many have done it consistantly for the last 2 or 3 seasons - Cheating Horse and Henry - any more?

It's a team game and our goals come from a team effort.

I agree that Davies aint a wide man and is much less effective if he's stuck out there for long periods.

However, Diouf is also deceptively slow and Stelios aint Linford Christie. Pace is great and the one thing I believe we lack throughout the team (Gardner excepted) but it doesn't mean everything.

I wouldn't break the bank for any other striker in England apart from James Beattie. Would be bloody brilliant at Bolton, plays a similar game to Davies put with a better goal scoring record.

Would fit in fantastic with the system we play!
