Cowardly Custard Or Just Thinking Straight?

Featured Replies

While out today in Droylsden town centre 3 hooded lads jump out of a car ran pass me and chased this bloke down the street and gave him what can be only described as a bit of a kicking. Even though I'm a coward my first thought was fook me I had better help this guy out. But then I thought bollox to that there's 3 of them I'm not going to be another Gary Newlove.

Now on reflection it looks like I chose correctly because they obviously knew this bloke and they were waiting for him, this was no random beating - his and their business was nothing to do with me. Anyway, given that you don't have time to weigh things up at that time would I be right in thinking that most folk would have done the same as me?

Always go with the odds 3-1 never a good option wasnt anything to do with you so i wouldnt lose any sleep over it!

You did the best thing. While it may be distressing to see somebody get battered, you don't know the story. He could have been a paedo or a low life robber or whatever.

The news is full of too many stories where people have ended up seriously injured or dead, for helping a stranger.

It's a sad state of affairs, but that's the world we live in.

Don't honestly know what I would have done as something like that is usually something you react to without thinking.

I probably would have done the same as you or maybe (as you were in a town centre) shouted something like 'They're recording you on CCTV' hoping that the three stopped kicking and scarpered.

Anyway, you did what you thought was right at the time and no one will blame you for that. I don't suspect too many would have done much different.

Droylsden closed off this morning as somebody got stabbed to death so the story goes dont know if this is true but will let you know. Undies maybe you did the right thing staying away

My dog was purchased from Droylsden. I am now concerned what she's going to grow up like. I can only hope I got her out of there in time.

Not particularly wanting to swim against the tide here but, what kind of society have we evolved into? I understand folk not wanting to end up dead , maimed or severely injured for intervening in summat that's fook all to do with them but, deep down, I am sure you're all decent enough to at least feel it's wrong and want to do summat about it.

I know from experience that it can be foolhardy. I have a mad brother who intervened in Sydney when a dozen or so Lebanese were sorting a bloke out in a nightclub. Ended up hospitalised. When I asked him if he would do it again he said 'Fook, yeah! Not reet twelve on to one is it?'

Question. You have a shotgun. You hear some coont banging around downstairs in the middle of the neet; go down with the gun and confront the thieves. Would you shoot if one of em came at you with a screwdriver? I know I fooking would and b0llocks to the legal consequences.

Yes, I agree that this would seem to have no relationship to a street kicking by a mob. The point I am trying to make is that society; the media; the ass of law we have in many cases has changed the way that people think about these things and, in essence, has forced them away from much that is basically good and right in the human character.

Agreed, but, few years ago, my old fella was leaving a pub and came across two scrotes kicking an old man on the ground in the ginnel near the house and saw them rifle his pockets and take his wallet, he then knocked the sh?t out of them and took the wallet back and looked after the old man, unknown to him a resident who heard the commotion had phoned the police, up shot of the events was, old man still had his wallet and was too scared to say anything and probably couldn't identify the muggers, my dad was arrested, charged and found guilty of assault and GBH on the two scrotes, who also got compensation for their "distress" and injuries. view of the law changed that day,and my opinion on what to do in a similar situation.

the old fella says he'd still do the same again but i'd think twice to be honest.

My brother coming home from the boozer saw a girl being slapped by a bloke, so he stepped in and just told the bloke he was bang out of order, next thing is girl runs round corner and brings back another couple of lads and all 3 bloke set about my brother, all he could hear whilst getting the shite kicked out of him was the girl he tried to protect shouting "kick him in the head and stamp on him", luckily he's quite handy and managed to diffuse the situation by giving one of the lads a reet good smack and they ran off, and asked if he would do it again he says he would, because the one you turn your back on may just be the one that really needs your help.

Fatolive - sad bloody story that. A prime example of why I mentioned 'ass of a law' which, for example, ended up with yon mon in Norfolk being prosecuted for shooting an intruder. I would not let that colour my judgement one iota if confronted with the same situation. Shoot first, ask questions/be prosecuted later. Safety of my family comes first and that's what I'm there for.

Dodgywheel - another one which gets yer goat. I must say though that intervening in a 'domestic' is a different thing. Don't like seeing women copping a pasting but they are just as likely to turn on you if you belt their bloke. Best giving those ones a wide berth unless it looks like the cowardly fcuker might kill her.

Going off on a bit of a tangent (though i have several experiences of intervening, some good and some that went pear shaped) I was in china about 2 years ago and had visited a potential supplier in the morning, business done at 10:30am the management of about 6 took me and my mate out for lunch in a mini bus to a nearby town / village. As we pulled into the road in front of the restaurant there was a big crowd around 4 chinks fighting, very reminisce of the old school playground scene. No one did owt to stop this, but we all watched as 3 blokes gave one guy a proper leathering. This went on for about 8 minutes, with the one guy getting in the odd return punch and kick. The guy eventually broke free and ran off down a back street, when the crowd just melted away. We asked our hosts but they just shrugged and said it was probably about money or wimin.

Just seemed surreal at that time of the morning in the centre of what was their high street.

The thing is, 10-15 years ago, you could have intervened and have been pretty safe in the knowledge that the most you would get is a good slap if you came off worse. Now, you are likely to be on the receiving end of a knife or kicked about the pavement when you're down and out.

Only yesterday the missus was telling me about her friends fella who was car-jacked and asked if I would have fought back or just handed over the keys. I said I suppose it would depend on how many of them they were and if they had a knife or whatever. She got quite angry and said that if it happened I must just hand over the keys, a lump of metal isn't worth losing your life over, especially when we've kids. That kind of thinking just didn't exist, in say the 80's, its a really sad indictment of how things have got over the last few years.

I went through a phase of getting involved in this sort of thing.

Once saw three lads taking the piss out of a bloke - you could tell it was going to turn nasty. Then they jumped him and one of them smacked the fella across the face with a bottle. I just snapped, legged it over and dragged the lttle shit with the bottle off. He legged it and I ran after him and collared him. I was dragging him of to the cop shop round the corner when the fella who'd been set upon stuck his foot through a shop window setting all sorts of alarms off.

Was all getting too complicated so let the lad go on his way with a swift boot up the arse for good luck.

The thing is with the situation I encountered is that I don't feel guilty about not stepping in. In my opinion this was a dispute between folk over something that had feck all to do with me. I wasn't going to take one on the chin, or worst, for a bloke who might have touched a kid up, owed money, robbed a house or whatever. This wasn't some old girl holding on to her bag while a crack head dragged her off down the street. You have to take things as you see them in respect of things like this.

And, while I'm on the subject, anyone who gets involved in a domestic, especially a pissed up one, is foolhardy.

Wasn't a mugging, wasn't some girl getting slapped about by a pissed up boyfriend - folk don't jump out of cars and kick f?ck out of people in the middle of the street for no reason.

If you'd stepped in and broke it up they'd have got him next time, so all you'd have done is risk getting tw?tted yourself. No point.

so when I got jumped by 8 lads and had a brick smashed over my head, none of you would of helped?????

That's virtually slap bang in the town centre.

He didn't belt him at first just walked over and said "hang on a minute mate , what ever she has done theres no need to be smacking her about" , the next thing he was set upon, he reckons it was set up to entice some one to intervene then they could beat them up, just happened they picked the wrong one with our kid.

Never join in a fight you dont know about, unless its your mates.

That's the good bit. I hope he cracked the feckers jaw.

Reminds me of a couple of incidents, albeit both with a much more level playing field than Undies':

I was pushing my eldest in his pram down the hill towards Bury Market. Being at the top of the slope I had a tremendous vista of all lower down. (Word of the day; vista!) Anyway, I say a lad running up the hill towards me and a much-too-old-to-do-a-reasonable-job security guard chasing him. As he ran towards me I put the brake on the pushchair, and barged the f?cker into a shop window. How he never went through it is anybody's guess. Turns out he'd knicked an old dear's handbag. I trembled like a leaf for the next 15 minutes once the adrenalin started going through . . . because by then the wife had caught up with the commotion and was in full interrogation mode about why I felt it was ok to leave my son alone in a pram while I went playing at Super-Heroes.

Another time came after a night out in town:

I walked into the in-door of Bank St Taxis. There were about three couples in front of me. I asked if anyone was off to Harwood or heading that way so I could be a miser and share the fare. No takers. Anyway, I got talking to the couple nearest to me in the queue. As they got to the front a youngish lad walked to the front. The lad I'd been talking to enquired as to what he was doing and pointing out that there was a queueing system. "fcuk queueing!" he said. To which the girlfriend of the lad retorted, "Well over my dead body are you getting in a taxi before us three."

Three? I thought. I'm not even with them!

Anyway, the lad felt that he'd need to show a bit of valour in order to keep face with his true love. He wasn't the largest of lads so I gave him 'the nod' to let him know I'd back him up if it turned to fisticuffs.

So off this lad went to remonstrate with the knobhead, knowing I was there to make the odds work in his favour. All of a sudden, I find myself wrestling with said knobhead and the lad is 20 yards down the street. I swung the lad round and unfortunately (for him) he hit a taxi with his face. I held onto him and then along came the lad and gave him a punch in the face! I wasn't impressed at this and told him so. The amount of CCTV down there and here's me holding a lad down while the other lad thumps him! gary neville!

The thing is, with incidents like the ones mentioned here you have to make a very quick assesment-

1,Is someone coming unstuck here through no fault of their own and may need some help.

2,Has the incident got f?ck all to do with me, and i may come seriously unstuck if i get involved.

Sadly these days chances are it will be the latter, 9 times out of 10 you're probably better off not getting involved.

Man or a mouse? - Pass me the cheese board please, it isn't worth the risk these days.
