Megson V Allardyce Playing Style

Featured Replies

Having watched Blackburn on TV yeterday, I am 100% convinced that the playing style of Megson is far better than Allardyce, Allardyce has turned pedersen into a throwing machine and everything is lumped up to a Samba, at least we are trying to get the ball down and pass it, with 1 or 2 better midfield players I think we could have the platform to leave behind the lump it long and hard phillosophy of Allardyce.

i watched both of blackburns games against spurs and liverpool games and it was just as dire.

if someoen would get up and support Elmander we'd do a damn sight better

That Pedderson geezer; I thought he'd head-butted Robinson at one point!

i believe we do play more football now, but the manager is ginger so hes rubbish

How dare you slate Sir Sam and his flowing, attacking football. Burn him as a witch.

Leave behind any chance of Europe as well. With you on that.

Maybe BSA's just carrying out a means to and end in terms of staying in the division, he'll probably be back to his free flowing tippy tappy best next season.

If you believe Bolton should be in the Euro shake up every season your in for a very dissapointing time, the fact of the matter is we have the resources of a championship club and we should and would not be anywhere near the best 10 teams in England and if it were not for Eddie Davies we would not be in the position we are in,the sooner bolton fans get the reality check and the kick up the arse some of them need the better.

Agree with that, :good:

I agree.

It may not be nice to watch, but nice football at this stage of the season may not bring the points in that is required to stay in the PL.

Yeah its real enthralling stuff to watch at the minute. Get your head out the clouds the football we play is terrible at times, dont know how we are going to cram the fans in next year?

We dont look to bad with davo and elmander working alonside each other (10 min a game) but when theres 40 yards in between them it doesnt seem to be working!

Sam played to our strengths and got results with a bit of entertainment/scalps thrown in on the way.

no one said it was, but whilst the flair of JJ and Youri might be missing the actual build up play is a lot better than under Sam

JJ might have danced around witht he ball a bit and got us all excited but then he'd punt it up to SKD or into the Corner for Dioufy

I didn't say that. I was merely pointing out that before you denounce Allardyce you should remember the qualifications for Europe we achieved with his crap football. Apart from about 4 home games this season the standard of football on offer has been poor.

You forgot about The League Cup Final (which was spoiled by a certain Mike Riley!)

No Allardyce played to a system - and he acquired the players who fit into that system Rickets / Davies - big target man, midfield defender Campo / Hierro - finding forgotten talent - Djorkaeff, Jay Jay - the system worked very, very well - and as been copied by many other clubs since.

The squad aged - Allardyce left - Lee tried to change the style and failed - cue someone able to resurrect the Allardyce style with the best of the old Allardyce squad that was left - in an attempt to keep us up - therefore Megson.

Megson is now in a transition stage trying to build 'his' team (whilst at the same time keeping us up) - which as far as I can tell tries to close down the oppositions midfield - hence two defensive mid field McCann, Muamba, Basham - and fast support down the wings - Taylor, Gardner, bid for Morrison - to a lone striker Elmander.

Seems to me he was trying to replace one of the two defensive mid field with a defensive mid fielder who could also pass - hence bid for Veloso.

I'm guessing this is the next stage in his plan to take the team forward (finding someone to play along Cahill is obviously a priority to strengthen the team - but won't change the way we play like a Veloso type player would).

As an after thought - are Bolton a less attractive to watch than those teams around us?

Stoke are hardly attractive to watch, nor Boro. Newcastle fans are not over the moon with what they are watching. Sunderland fans are moaning about their manager and how his teams play. Portsmouth are these days effective but not really entertaining. Blackburn are playing to the Allardyce system of big forward and long throw ins! Even 5th place Villa were nothing special to watch on Saturday!

I'm sure Bolton won't be the only team who sell less Season Tickets next year!

An attacking midfielder/playmaker and a centre half are the main targets for next season IMO.

We'll probably need a striker too, Davies isn't getting any younger despite the great season he's had.

The long ball game or POMO (Position Of Maximum Opportunity) was actually developed by a former resident of Bolton. He was Charles Hughes who was manager of the England Amateur team in the 60s.

i thought this was obvious to most people?

I think when Davies is in the side, we use the "direct" method as an easy option at times, Mark Davies will hopefully add an attacking option next year if he is fit along with like what Traf says, a centre half, I would throw in a striker to partner Elmander, we have missed a decent midifleder for a while now

I remember this guy, Director of FA coaching until 1996 and often blamed for the lack of basic skill in English players. His tenure was about 12 years and many managers including BSA where taught this model.

says it all

I agree entirely that we need to sign a creative midfielder and a new centre half to partner Cahill. In terms of signing a new centre forward I don't think that is a priority for us at the moment. We need to get the most out of what we have before spending any more money. Elmander was far too isolated on Saturday. I am convinced that if he is given a simple pass to his feet that he has the ability to bring other players into the game and to cause opposition defenses more of a problem.

We need a creative midfield player who can take the ball off our back four and knock a simple pass. At the moment too many long balls are bypassing midfield then coming straight back at us. Again we also need to make sure we are getting the best out of the players we have. Tamir played it simple when given the opportunity on Saturday but he needs to show more for the ball when we are in posession.

I thought that Blackburn's 2nd should have been disallowed as I saw it as Samba interfering with the keeper. I'm sure they scored a goal with that MO a few weeks back too. Seem to be getting away with it.

Must admit I did think the same

Yes and at times it was entertaining. That is why we turn up/pay up isnt it to be entertained?

I can count on one hand the games this year i have genuinley enjoyed watching and before you say im not all doom and gloom Megson out etc. Come on be honest with yourself Megson has had more than enough time to mould his team. Next year will be exactly the same as this one merely existing in a league at the expense of cup runs and entertaining football.
