Well, before you are can I offer a warm welcome. Recently, we seem to have had an influx of dolts who can offer nothing other than attempts to turn every thread into an anti Megson rant.

 

More clear thinkers are needed on here.

 

Bolty lad, i know you're lording it in the sunshine while we suffer shit English weather, but today as most home matches have been utter dross. If you had to sit through that shite then i think you would re draft your comments. Clear thinking, you're having a giraffe. A lot of posters on here talk the biggest load of shite i've ever read.

Why is it that any poster with a small number of posts thinks Megson is shite and no good for the club yet established posters seem to have a disproportionate stubborn view that he's doing a great job. Not having a go just making an observation

As you may imagine, these are major events at Bolty Towers. They get the full treatment that my opinion believes they deserve. Front of the 42"LCD; six pack of Strongbow Original and the missus despatched to the boudoir to talk to her mother in Tun Fowt and prepare herself for what might happen next should we have a scintillating win (yes - the scintillating bit is bait to send you and others of your ilk off on a rant )

 

I have watched every minute intently. Yes, I have to agree, much of it has not been uplifting. Nonetheless, this is tempered by the fact that, like many on here, I was a devout follower through the doldrum years and, even now, I am still pinching myself that my one true faith is due for a 9th consecutive season at the pinnacle of English football.

 

So, no, I am not having a laugh. Yes, I would like Guus Hiddink to manage us please. Yes, I would like us to sign Lionel Messi and Kaka. A reality check tells me that these things are unlikely to happen but, we are still little Bolton mixing it with the big boys and they can't get rid of us. Take pride in that and get behind them.

We were assured pre-Reebok that the move to a new stadium woudn't incur serious debt for the club.

Not that long after moving into the Reebok, debts were stated to be around ?23m.

Now the debt is ?53m.

So we need to be in the Prem to service the debt, but staying in the Prem increases the debt by ?3m or more per season.

So what's the endgame of all this ? How do we ever reduce the debt ? What happens if/when Sky income decreases or Mr Davies pulls out (as he will, one way or another) ?

 

Second point : Survival in the Prem doesn't necessarily mean dire football week after week. Our teamwork hasn't significantly improved all season, and it will take something more then just new signings to change that.

 

Debt can increase in many ways - one of which is borrowing money to invest - such as buying players on the transfer market. So the club as spent money it has had to borrow to buy players and have gone deeper into debt!

 

This money is borrowed from the bank or the owner and as to be repaid within a given time - but it also means that the bought players also become assets on the Balance sheet too - so if we got to a stage we no longer could service our debts (say relegation) the assets (players) would have to be sold.

 

The more debt we had to clear - the more players would have to be sold.

 

Clearly the more of our better players we sell - the harder we will find it to get back quickly to the Premiership - which will result in significantly less income and possibly the need to sell more players.

 

Also on a more broader scale the club - which is owned by one man - becomes less valuable if he had to sell it - although I believe the club as been on the market for over a year now and there doesn't seem to be much interest in it from potential purchasers.

 

Second point - "Survival in the Prem doesn't necessarily mean dire football" - true but apart from West Brom have the teams below us - Boro, Newcastle, Hull (second half of the season anyway), Sunderland, Portsmouth, Blackburn and Stoke been playing attractive football?

 

It would seem to me that a common trait of the 'weaker' Premiership clubs is their negative style of football in order to keep the point they kicked off with rather than the two extra that are on offer for the game.

 

As for our team - I view it as 'Work in Progress' - a few key players of the jig saw Megson is building are still missing - most notably a creative midfield player and a competent centre back partner for Cahill. Once these positions have been filled (plus one or two other additions hopefully) then I think the team will become better balanced and hence play better football.

 

The one thing all the Megson Out crowd misses is that Megson is only a paid employee of Eddie Davies. Mr Davies measure of success of him is Premiership survival - which he has now delivered twice (the first time against the odds too!). Davies won't care a great deal of how the Reebok crowd view Megson as a manager - because their view simply does not count.

 

He will not even worry too much about entertainment value either - because the bulk of the money to the club does not come from the fans pockets - it comes from Sky.

 

As a businessman however he would like to retain their custom (and their pounds!) and as such as begun to give a few incentives to them - reduced ticket prises, fanzone, singing stand, free away travel, etc - to induce them to keep coming - but if push comes to shove the club could manage with say a 10,000 attendance - it certainly could not manage without the Sky money that comes with the Premier League - hence the situation teams like us at the bottom of the Premiership face each and every year.

 

The Premiership has created a monster which might be a great success to world wide audiences (and bring in billions of pounds) but have left many traditional fans underwhelmed with their clubs and their clubs ambitions of simply surviving.

 

I fully understand why many want to walk away (and not just at the Reebok too) - and I don't blame them at all - if Bolton Wanderers wasn't my addiction so to speak then I would walk too! It is only because I can see the reasoning behind why we are what we are and the thrill of the Bolton win - no matter how horrible the match is to watch - that will always keep me coming back I guess.

If, IF, we get relegated next season with Megson responsible then I would expect a change at the helm. I won't be writing on bedsheets for it though because I know that people like Gartside and Davies will be just as aware of the problem.

IF we had won the UEFA cup last season some people would have found reason to moan whether it had been the style of play, a substitution he made etc etc. Some people are so anti- Megson that even if the bloke turned water into wine they'd complain he should have made it Stella!!

 

Your second point, some do expect us to be competing with the big 4 week in week out despite the fact that they have one player that is worth more than our entire squad. For a club of our size and financial muscle a top ten finish is a great achievement, anything more than that is wonderful.

I support an English team and I'd love to see us with an all English team with a few local lads thrown in for good measure but accept that good players are few and far between so it's inevitable that we'll have to look overseas for talent. That numpty has just got us another season in the premiership after somehow clearing the mess LSL left us in He needs time FFS

 

Oh come on how much longer do those of you with Megson coloured specs will you continue to defend this man.

 

He is simply not up to the standard we should have, and if you think he has improved anything in a season and a half then my firend its time you went to watch our red friends down the road.
