Moderators Casino Posted January 4, 2011 Moderators Share Posted January 4, 2011 A bit premature I think Cassie. to say the jury is out? no, not really it'd be too soon to say hes done badly, or even done well but to say he's not set the world alight, i think thats fair enough
Moderators Zico Posted January 4, 2011 Moderators Share Posted January 4, 2011 coiyle is clearly agood motivator but can he identify good players and get them to sign for me, the jury is very much out and before you chuck wilshere at me, he was hardly a nobody and to be honest, in the cold light of day, he contributed a goal and an assist same as weiss I'll give you Weiss as he wasn't even a team player, just tricks with little else, but you can't say Wilshire didn't do owt other than score and get an assist he was a class player and a key reason in our resurgance from Jan-May - good engine, got the ball, took it forward, distributed well like saying Muamba has only scored a goal for us this season done nowt else
Traf
A bit premature I think Cassie. He has only had one window in which to business, you cant really include last January, when did he arrive 8-9 or something? It would have been a mad time with everything going on. Also Jan windows can be very dodgy times, panic buys inflated prices etc(Elmander quoted at 20odd million for example) I agree we need improving especially around the defensive area but I wouldnt be too disappointed if we did no business at all. I still think a top 10 finish is a good season even though it might seem a disappointment considering we have been top 8 all year. Europe could be too soon next season. Bang on the money. Ani
thing is as we have a decent squad, you can say that about most positions at the end of the day, if Coyle thinks he's better than what we have, we bring them in and play them ahead of Klasnic/Davies/Elmander/whoever eh ? we had no midfield players or defenders on the bench on New Years Day. Pablo
Funny how quick football changes, 6-12 months ago, you needed full backs, wingers, strikes, subs and midfielders.....now you have a decent squad, competeing for a Euro spot. Thats why we love this sport.
Moderators Zico Posted January 4, 2011 Moderators Share Posted January 4, 2011 eh ? we had no midfield players or defenders on the bench on New Years Day. I was answering the question as to where we play Vela if all our other forwards stay fit - and said if he's better than them, he gets a game, same goes for every position for example, Holden has been out for few times of late so do we a) go for someone "not as good" as Holden, so we can put him on the bench (and lack ambition), or go for someone "better" who displaces Holden in the team same goes for LBs, RBs and CBs if everyone stays fit, what's the point in signing anyone? answer being, if they're better than what we have, it will make us better

(robinson back so we can have a full back on the bench) apart from the numbers, which is a worry - it's really the injury to Holden that shows us up as being short, as we really don't look the same team without him - with him back and fit, generally we seem to be able to cover everywhere else without looking too much weaker (but then we lose 2 FBs and it starts to look flimsy there too) to me, it would seem if we are to strengthn the midfield, we need to look for a better player in Muamba's position - which this Utrecht player might be as for in defence, we'd have to bring a 3rd choice CB in the York game should also be interesting as to what a 2nd string is these days
onlyoneawalker
FWIW I think coyle will be looking for a right back as there's no sign of gretski getting offered a new deal and I think it's an area we can strengthen that then leaves Ricketts as CB cover for departed AOB and Right back again. If we sell Cahill which I think is unlikely unless we get a silly bid which is possible with Chelsea so seemingly "poor" at the minute we'll then swoop late for a centre half - curtis davies etc etc. Maybe get Vela in either to replace Elmo if he goes which is unlikely or offer cover at right wing while Chungys away. I reckon thats the only business he will look to do - when he gets shut of 5-6 players in summer out of contract and possibly Cahill and Elmo then we'll really see him shape his squad and that's then the time to really judge him - so far he's got a loan signing in Weiss wrong so no great wrong doing there but he's got Stu Holden for free on a long term deal who is absolutely class and worth at least ?5-6m now let alone in 2 years so I'd say his track record although short and restricted is very very good....Petrov has his critics yes as his marquee signing but he's been good in patches and earnt us at least 2 points with goals v blackpool and United - and for that matter blake came off the bench and has earnt us a point v brum - have faith Edited January 4, 2011 by onlyoneawalker
Traf
Reading between the lines and listening to things Coyle has said on TV etc, the Robbie Blake signing had much to do with RB's influence in a dressing room: a unifying spirit kind of person, who'd also be useful for a 15min burst as a sub if necessary. Moderators Casino Posted January 4, 2011 Moderators Share Posted January 4, 2011 (edited) so far he's got a loan signing in Weiss wrong i didn't say weiss was wrong he created one for taylor and won the free kick for the other at stoke Petrov has his critics yes as his marquee signing but he's been good in patches and earnt us at least 2 points with goals v blackpool and United - and for that matter blake came off the bench and has earnt us a point v brum - have faith he also cost us 2 with his abysmal effort at west brom point is, his 2 biggest deals (if we can agree petrov and alonso fit the bill) have so far seen little payback and we may be about to see him invest some serious money if cahill goes petrov is now seemingly behind rodrigo, who i've got down in the 'not bad at all' column and alonso might be a world beater one day, but it won't be this season when money is tight, its an odd one, unless it swung the rodrigo deal with some agent or other...and to be fair, maybe he didn't really cost 2 million Edited January 4, 2011 by Casino

Ani
if cahill goes for ?18M as looks more and more likely............ ?14M profit so ?3.5M to Villa (i think) Asssume eddie takes his ?4M back....that leaves ?11M....with wages say means we can sign 2 players for ?4M each bearing in mind cahills wage goes..... So you have ?8M and 2 players to buy...I think 1 has to be a centre half and 1 one other...... Go on....sensible suggestions only....you need a centre half and 1 other........ If we could nip in ahead of Sunderland, which may be unlikely as they're doing pretty well, I'd have a cheeky bid for Nedum Onuoha I rate him higher than Richards and I know alot of City's back room staff do too

Although I doubt he'd come to us now he's spent a bit of time at Sunderland - rightly so really. I think Micah Richards would be an fantastic signing - although he's probably looking for a 'bigger' club and bet his wages are out of our league. L/H White
said he wanted ?29m, for them two and kranjaer. i think he is taking the piss. Really? According to SSN.com, West Ham, Birmingham, Sunderland and Newcastle have shown interest. Surely we could beat off these clubs for their signatures? Kranjaer would be a fantastic addition to the squad.
Ani
do you think the priority should be attacking players? (Keane) or wide players? (Bentley) I would nt cry if we were linked with Sidwell, however that is based on seeing about 10 minutes of games from about 4 years ago.
