Zico Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Defenders are a priority for me, as we struggle to keep clean sheets (maybe this is one for the summer tho rather than january). think that's more tactics than personnel
jimmyjoojar Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Completely agree, I think any back 4 would struggle with the way Coyle wants his teams to play. That said neither Cahill or Zat Knight covered themselves in glory at the weekend.
Boothy Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Manchester City could scupper Wigan's hopes of signing Bolton goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi for ?2m

HomerJay Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 (edited) ?2M or ?5M?? http://www.dailymail...i-Al-Habsi.html at 1st i thought why would city want him? but then who do they have after hart, once given leaves? then i thought why would al habsi want to be 2nd choice again? but then i thought, they probably double/triple/quaduple his wages without even thinking about it. fulhams a non-starter Edited December 22, 2010 by HomerJay
jules_darby Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 think that's more tactics than personnel Glad someone else has seen it We get done consistently from midfield runners, particularly the opposing wide players This is primarily due to Lee & Petrov Though some would prefer to blame Ricketts and Robbo as they don't do lovely stepovers

Our wingers have been poor going forward imo and defensively Chungy and Petrov dont even try. At the beginning of the season I thought full backs were our weakest area but i would say our wingers are becoming a bit of a concern.

Gonk Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 ?2M or ?5M?? http://www.dailymail...i-Al-Habsi.html That was from 1st December. Schwarzer has now signed a new deal

Player starts/tackles won/tackles lost Robbo 18/33/20 Matty 7/12/3 Petrov 12/6/2 Ricketts 7/19/3 Steinsson 12/26/9 Chungy 17/29/5 I'd say that suggests he does his bit. Doesn't do Petrov any favours, mind.
HomerJay Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 (edited) you cant fault lee for his effort. he just aint a defender, which is fair enough. petrov is a bone-idle cunt and doesnt offer enough going foward to justify us carrying him. IMHO of course. i didnt realise ricketts tackling was such dogshit. Edited December 22, 2010 by HomerJay
jules_darby Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Right, you can't compare midfielders and fullbacks on tackling stats alone as oftent he types of tackles are very very different Compare the same positions - yeah OK But bollocks to the rest of it - the most tackles was always Davies year on year (though I reckon Holden could push him this time out) does that make all the defenders wank? Chung Lee tries - and it's not a lack of dilligence as such, but his positioning often leaves the full-back behind him stuck versus 2 players.

enzo gambaro Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Was it balls the intended comparison. The stats show both left back and right back make about the same number of tackles and that Chungy and Taylor (2 tackles per game)provide better cover than Petrov (0.66 tackles a game). There's more to it, obviously, but I think it's fairly accurate. I'd say Ricketts' stats were pretty good, Homer.

Fair enough Regardign right back - I honestly don't know which of the 2 I would prefer I still think we'd be a better unit in support of the defence overall and without stifling the attack too much with M Davies on the right, Taylor on the left and Holden and Muamba in the middle....

Garrp Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 If anything, it shows just how good Robinson has been this season.
tylswhite Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Lee has only lost 5 tackles this season? Out of them 29 he has apparantly made how many do you think were actual proper tackles where he actually tried to win the ball? He often sticks a foot out but thats about it. He has time to develop this at least. Petrov on the other hand is just a disgrace when it comes to defence or teamwork as a whole. He doesnt give a fuck about the team imo, he is only interested when he has the ball and even then he just shoots from 40 yards.
oggybwfc Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 If anything, it shows just how good Robinson has been this season. I have to agree with this, apart from Holden i think Robbo has been our best and most consistant player,
enzo gambaro Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 I have to agree with this, apart from Holden i think Robbo has been our best and most consistant player, Aye, I fucking love him, me. He's really won me round this season.
jules_darby Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Hands up, I've said this many times - I thought he was too slow and immobile for Premiership football But, he's performed very well this season Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's one of the best fullbacks in the league, but he'll do for me For now
onlyoneawalker Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 The winger full back debate just boils down to Coyle placing the emphasis on attack not defence doesn't it? So if you are a defender in a coyle team you might be left high and dry a few times just like if you were an attacker (Elmo) you'd be left high and dry in a Megson team - so on that basis I'd agree i think the full backs have done very well this year all things considered I've always liked Robbo he's a better footballer in terms of distribution than he gets credit for as well
Zico Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 I like Petrov and think he brings a lot to the team I think we have enough tackle in midfield to cover his lack of I wouldn't put anyone on the left before him he's what we've been crying out for, particulary under Megson
fruitbat69 Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 We've scored 30 goals in 18 game 4th highest goalscorers in Prem so attack play is not issue but just one clean sheet all season which proves we're struggling at the back compared to 9 clean sheets for Mackems. Anyone know how many points goals scored conceded after 18 games last season as a comparison.
