Its 65 years ago today that the disaster happened.

 

I will be taking a couple of minutes today to remember those who lost their lives.

RIP those who passed away,

RIP.

R.I.P TO THE 33 WHO LOST THEIR LIFES SUPPORTING THE WANDERERS.

 

IT REALLY IS A SHAME THAT THE MEDIA DONT DO ANYTHING TO REMEMBER OR HONOR THE 33.

BUT THEN AGAIN WE ARE NOT LIVERPOOL ARE WE.

Apparently the next game at Burnden was played the following Wednesday! We then travelled to Birmingham for an FA Cup semi-final...

Didn't know that, at the time of the disaster, the embankment alone held more folk than the whole of the Reebok does now. That's a hell of a crowd.

Looking at the list, there are folk from all over the place, not just Bolton. Back then they didn't all have cars either, so travelling to the game would have required a real effort. You also have to bear in mind that this tragedy only happened less than a year after WWII finished, so people would already have still been in a state of shock and grief, this simply must have been devastating.

My dad was on his way home to Bolton on the bus from Manchester, intending to go to the game and be on the Embankment.

He saw the vast crowds and changed his mind about going to the game.

 

RIP to all those Whites who perished supporting the club they loved.

RIP to those who died must have been shattering to the families especially as it was so close to the end of WW2. Colin did you know the Bentham who died was related to the well known Benthams from Walkden and to the butcher of the same name in LH.

BBC reported it because a fortnight ago I sent them an email asking them that as they mention Hillsborough every year, they could find time on the 65th anniversary of the Burnden Park disaster to remember the people who lost their lives.

Good on you pal.

Spoke to my mum about it this morning. My Grandad, her dad, was on the embankment that day but at the other side near Burnden Paddock. She was telling me it was like watching a line of dominoes falling over. Nobody realised the horror of what was happening.

My mum recalls they heard it on the radio and were waiting for him to come home but he'd nipped for a pint or two and was late. I'd imagine he got a right bollocking off my Grandma.

 

As has been said, setting off to watch a game and not getting home again shouldn't happen, then or now.

My dad and his grandad did the same when they saw the crowds at the embankment,I often wonder what the crowd size would have been if the ground could have held the demand of fans

My grandad was there that day - but on the Lever End. Like many others he got home to find half the street out waiting for their (mainly) menfolk to return. He'd no idea people had died, just thought they'd fainted, especially since the game was restarted. As people have said, the timing (just months after the end of the war) makes it even more terrible, if that's possible. R.I.P. the 33.

My Grandad was on the Embankment that day and did get slightly injured, luckily he wouldn't let my Grandmother go as she was 6 months pregnant with my mother, i probably wouldn't be here now if she had gone.

My old dad was there, after finishing work at Walkers tannery, made the short walk to the Burnden Park. Luckilly he was early so was in the far end of the railway enbankmant. He knew there was going to be a problem when people where climbing over the perimiter fencing from the signal box on the railway line. My dad never went into details of this dissaster nor did he of the war until the day he died. Some things are left to memory but never let us forget. R.I.P.
