An adult can watch a Bundesliga game at Schalke for as little as 15 Euros.

Plus Schalke are from Gelsenkirchen which in a lot of ways is a bit like somewhere like Middlesbrough.

Once had a thriving industry where everyone worked but when it all shut down mass unemployment followed.

So they also keep ticket prices low to help fans get in to watch the games and are generally a community based club.

And a percentage of the money made from ticket prices for teams in the Bundesliega gets invested in public transport so it is also easier for fans to get to the games.

"It was in the mid-1980s that St. Pauli's transition from a traditional club into a "Kult" club began. The club was also able to turn the location of its ground in the dock area part of town, near Hamburg's famous Reeperbahn ? centre of the city's night life and its red-light district ? to its advantage. An alternative fan scene emerged, built around left-leaning politics and the "event" and party atmosphere of the club's matches. Supporters adopted the skull and crossbones as their own unofficial emblem. St. Pauli became the first team in Germany to officially ban right-wing nationalist activities and displays in its stadium in an era when fascist-inspired football hooliganism threatened the game across Europe.[citation needed] In 1981, the team was averaging crowds of only 1,600 spectators: by the late 1990s they were frequently selling out their entire 20,000-capacity ground.[citation needed]

In the early 1990s, the media in Germany started to work on the Kult-image of the club, focusing on the punk part of the fan-base in TV broadcasts of the matches. By this time, the media also started to establish nicknames like "Freibeuter der Liga" (buccaneers of the league) as well as das Freudenhaus der Liga ("Brothel of the League" but Freudenhaus also literally means "House of Fun")."

I'm moving to Germany to support St Pauli!!!

Regarding this whole argument about Bolton being a town and not a city, it just doesn't wash with me. If all those glory-hunting pricks from our town supported their local club we'd have fantastic support. Same goes for all those pricks who think 'supporting' your team means watching it on a foreign satellite channel in a pub. They moan that they can't afford to go but will easily swill ?30 worth of beer watching it on the big screen.

leftwing celtic loving scum they are

still have a top mob though

Going back to last night's game, I'd forgotten just how much I hate Graeme Souness.

What an absolute fuckstick the man is.

Schalke were absolute dogshit and were there to be raped yet he says, "Just sit back and let them have the ball".

He made Gary Megscum sound attacking!

South Yorkshire Police?

They killed football when they forced all those innocent Scousers to go in through the wrong gate without tickets.

I corrected it for you

Also being massively bankrolled by Gazprom (like Zenit are): the shirt deal is worth ?25m a season alone!

Hence they can attract players like Raul, Metzelder & Huntealaar on mega wages, which has, in turn, brought the crowds in. Plus it costs about thruppence to watch Bundesliga games.

Okocha, Djorkaeff etc etc

The ethos of watching German football is light years in front of the dullness of an experience of watching Premier League football.

I remember going to Munich, spending the best part of half an hour getting out of the city centre, to a stadium on the outskirts of the city centre thinking to myself "these Germans aren't daft, who's going to come watch an unfashionable Premier League team, in a half baked European competition".............

Take Souness for granted... we've got G. Neville to look forward to next year.

was that thatchers fault, too?

They have to someone (else) to blame

Anyway, Utd fans are now starting to put feelers out for tickets for the final.

Oh how amusing it would be if Schalke beat them

Say what you like about Hitler, but he had a knack of finding jobs for anyone - and in some cases free accommodation.

If you're looking to blame someone for Germany's unemployment then surely Churchill is a prime candidate.

Maybe they can change the room bookings in London they made for 14-May.

is it the government's job to make jobs for people?

"Work will set you free."

... although in hindsight that turned out to be a bit of a fib.

They should control the conditions in the economy to stimulate employment growth.

So, spunk money willy-nilly?

To be fair the Champions League is probably a better test of a team than the old European Cup, when teams had to get through just four rounds to reach the final, including a typical first round game against some Scandinavian part-timers.

You mean the old European Cup when you had to actually COME TOP of your league to qualify for it.

Champions League is a joke, just an old boys club.

It's better with the teams who are usually in it and not just Champions of each League IMO, however the name Champions League isn't really what it should be called.

I'm sure brickies in Dresden did alright after the war

So, instead of Real Madrid in the Champions League, we'd have Bangor City? Genius!&

It depends what you want from football.

Do you want to see what is effectively a European Super League? If so, then that's what you've got in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, those clubs that play in it year in, year out continue to get richer and richer making their own leagues less and less competitive.

It also means that clubs would rather finish fourth in the league than actually win a trophy - and that, for me, is just plain wrong.

When Liverpool won the European Cup in 1981 they won the first round 11-2 on aggregate against the Finnish champions. They won the second round 5-0 on aggregate against the Scottish champions and the third round 6-1 on aggregate against the Bulgarian champions.

They were then in the semi-final, before they finally met decent opposition in Bayern Munich.

Some people have very selective memories about the old European Cup.

Surely the league is more competitive if there's four teams getting richer instead of just one. From the mid-70's to the late 80's, Liverpool won the league 10 times in 15 seasons. That hardly suggests that it was more competitive back then when only one team qualified for the old European Cup.
