paulhanley Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I think Eagles would be a good addition - replacement for Moreno. At right back we already have Steinsson and Ricketts, so when Ricketts is fit again that'll make 3 rbs. I wonder if Coyle intends Ricketts to be a reserve/squad central defender full time from now on with Steinsson and Mears vying for the rb role. To me Ricketts looks far better at centre back than right back.
snowball Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Ok, with the emphasis on 'realistic' and being that SWP is on silly money at Citeh: If we have signed Pratley,Mears,Eagles, Jeffren, Onouha (bigger 'if', I know) & Reo-Coker then get lucky with Sturridge, our squad would have improved from last season, wouldn't it? Plus assuming Cahill stays as well. If not we might have different targets. Trouble comes if we accept an ?8 million bid say for him, on 31st August! Sturridge is the key. The non goalscoring alternatives that have been mentioned such as Cameron Jerome & Nile Ranger aren't up to much.
birch-chorley Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 To be honest I am a bit gutted with this, I am a big fan of Coyle and have been right behind the work he has been doing with the squad since he arrived. i.e Trimming down the number of players who just are not good enough to have a smaller leaner squad of better quality players. I think these 2 players are not prem quality and will at best be bench warmers but no better than Steinsson / Ricketts / Matt Taylor / Petrov. The standard of players I would like us to go for are.... Warnock, Onuha, Corluka, Jeffran, Reo Coker, SWP, Bellamy, Sturridge, Welbeck, Park Chu-Young etc (obviously not all of them but gives an idea of quality) Mears and Eagles dont fit the bill for me or what i thought OC was trying to do. OC keeps saying he need 3 or 4 more, I hope these 2 are not included in that as they do not make our first team better.
jules_darby Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Please tell me I'm still pissed No Fucking no no I'm doing a J We're fucking going down Bollocks
DazBob Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 As said previously, Eagles is a BIG improvement on Cohen and JOB. Mears can also be no worse than Steinsson (for whom there is no cover for atm anyway). When Ricketss comes back then he'll be cover for CB. We've also snapped up these two players for pretty much what we got for Al Habsi. I really can't understand the End Is Nigh attitude from so many. The transfer window was still open last I checked. Another striker or two and Jeffren (fingers crossed) and things will be looking a lot rosier. Stop panicking ffs.
jules_darby Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 No Seriously If this is real it is time to panic We've finally lost it if nowt else is in the locker Worried Very fucking worried
ROSSENDALEWHITE Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Good job Taylors going! there wouldnt be much sleeping going on if him and Eagles shared a room. As Coyle said last year Eagles is not good enough for the Prem and has 1 good game in 3.
ZiggyStardust Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 SSN report NRC in talks with us at the moment.
ROSSENDALEWHITE Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 SSN report NRC in talks with us at the moment. Can he play left back as Robbo is a championship player as best!
Bigtoe Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Ive had time to reflect Just what we need, a lightweight ponce in a lightweight midfield and a fullback who cant defend to cover a fullback who cant defend
SpiritofBurnden Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 The standard of players I would like us to go for are.... Warnock, Onuha, Corluka, Jeffran, Reo Coker, SWP, Bellamy, Sturridge, Welbeck, Park Chu-Young etc (obviously not all of them but gives an idea of quality) Most of whom are established Premier League players on Premier League wages with no need to move to a club that can't afford what they're currently earning.
Matt Lofthouse Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 First reaction last night was fook it I'm going to bed! However looking at it now, OC has worked with and knows these players a lot better than any of us do. So do we trust our managers judgement that he has improved our squad or just panic like fook. Burnley fans are in meltdown which is an added bonus. Give the lads a chance to prove themselves at least.
birch-chorley Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Most of whom are established Premier League players on Premier League wages with no need to move to a club that can't afford what they're currently earning. We have either held talks or been linked with all of them, yes they are prem quality and thats what we need. I would like us to sign a RB but I cannot see any point getting a one that is no better than Steinsson / Ricketts. A waste of transfer fee and wages in my opinion. We should buy less volume but better quality.
HomerJay Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Anybody who believes mears is a better fullback than steinsson is living in a fucking dreamworld. Eagles or moreno, makes no difference to me. I'm happy for either to be squad players who don't get a game. Unless were signing players who are better than the 1st eleven, What's the fucking point? We may as well keep existing squad players than replace them with more squad players.
Didledee Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Jeffren on left Eagles in the same boat as Rodrigo and Weiss Mears to fight for a place at the back. Reo Coker/Muamba and Mark Davies until Holden is back Reo Coker and Holden Muamba and Reo Coker Muamba and Holden Holden and Mark Davies and Reo Coker/Muamba in a 4-5-1 against the big teams away from home.

This sign would normally fill me with confidence that we where getting a couple of good uns but Burnley fans have a real nak for thinking that they are a lot bigger / better than they really are. (including standard of there players)
SpiritofBurnden Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 We have either held talks or been linked with all of them, yes they are prem quality and thats what we need. Given that the club are trying to reduce the wage bill, where's the money coming from to pay all these 'prem quality' players then?
HomerJay Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) Are the club trying to reduce the wage bill? Obviously the lower the better, but I'm not aware of any agenda? Edited July 23, 2011 by HomerJay

birch-chorley Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Given that the club are trying to reduce the wage bill, where's the money coming from to pay all these 'prem quality' players then? The same place the money is coming from to buy Eagles and Mears for ?3m and pay them both a weekly wage. I would rather see us sign one premiership quality player who would come straight into the first 11 and would command similar budget to these two combind.

Signing a right back that is no better than GS or SR will not do our wage bill any favours, now we will have 3 average but well paid right backs in the squad when we could have one good very well paid one with cover for less. Edited July 23, 2011 by birch-chorley
HomerJay Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 That's last november. Can't be arsed doing the sums but players that have left will have significantly reduced the wagebill. We still need to compete. Mears and eagles are signing I would expect from Swansea or norwich.
