Unemployed father-of-seven Raymond (not his real name) and his family rent a former council house on a social housing estate in north Wales. They do not own a car or take a regular annual holiday.

 

Raymond, a former educational software writer, has been jobless since 2001. His wife Katherine suffers from bipolar disorder with an anxiety disorder and is also unable to work.

 

Says Ray: "The market for my skills dried up 10 years ago - there's a total lack of work in my area of expertise."

 

The couple share their home with six of their children - their five-year-old son, Raymond's twin girls from his first marriage, and three of his wife's four children from an earlier relationship.

When they sign on, they should be made to take that 'Antabuse' stuff - it makes you really ill if you drink even one drop of booze. The problem of stopping them smoking is more problematic...could douse them in petrol I suppose?

 

 

Edit: I've thought about it for five minutes - definitely splash a bit of petrol on them (a dousing would be wasteful), at least then they'd be forced to bathe/shower and change/wash their clothes once a fortnight.

Now your just being daft. Not everyone on the dole is a lazy fat bastard. Grow up pal and try opening your mind a little bit. I was on the dole for 2 months 7 years ago and i was out there looking for work everyday. It also gave me the time to think about my career which turned out to be teaching and i've paid more back in tax already than I ever took off the jobcentre.

Im grateful for the welfare as it helped me feed myself and travel. Do you really think I'm not entitled to buy a pint during those 2 months? What kind of fascist state do you want to live in you muppet.

Being on welfare for 2 months is what it's there for. It's not there as a career. I suggest that's what Birch is referring to.

& the case in question if true, 80 odd notes a week on ale & fags? Even you can't justify that's a acceptable sundry item in your budget if they've been claiming for years.

Everyone who has claimed job seekers allowance for 11 years is a lazy fat bastard. Especially as from 2001 - 2007 the economy was strong. To say there are no jobs doing what you want to do for 11 years takes the piss. Look for a differnt job then!

 

Being on benefits and getting through 200 fags a week / sky and all the other stuff also takes the piss. Take the sky / fags money away from these clowns and spend it on more deserving areas like elderly / disabled care.

 

I have also claimed Job seekers / housing benefit in the past and it was very helpful but I only claimed for a month and I would have been fine with food vouchers and my bills paying.

Really? You know that for a fact do you? I know someone in Bolton whose only paid jobs in 22 years have been on government sponsored "training schemes". Everyone who has worked with her would have kept her on if they'd had the funds to employ her. She works 6 full days a week in a charity shop for nothing, doesn't drink, smoke, have Sky or anything that most people would call the bare necessities. Applies for any/all jobs going too.

 

If you could point me in the direction of any of these thousands of jobs she could have got, please do. Or rather, don't bother, she probably applied for them and didn't get anywhere.
