July 12, 20251 yr My immediate thought on the fruit tree is a greengage. Fruits not ripe yet of course. Could be a different type of plum, but Google search also says greengage. If you didnt plant it, or haven't noticed it before, then did you have a different tree in there initially? They're sometimes used as a rootstock for other trees, and sometimes they will send up branches from below the graft. This can out compete the intended tree, or the stem of the initial tree may have died off, and the rootstock has sent up new shoots. Rootstocks are used to give a different sized tree, or a more hardy one to that which the intended tree would otherwise have. They grow vigorously and it may also have some quite substantial thorns. Just enjoy the fruit: wait until they're ripe- plump, and slightly soft to the touch. Eat them like any other plum, or if you find them a bit sharp, make pie/crumble/jam or wine with them. They're really good.

They're ready when they are easily plucked from the tree- no great tugging, not branch snapping, but just a fairly easy pull. With this hot weather, don't be afraid to give it a good drink. We have had many flowers and good fertilisation this spring, and there will be an abundance of fruit. Inevitably, some will be shed, but keeping it well watered will help the ripening and yield. Keep an eye out for potential branch snapping if the weight gets too great.
